This photograph, taken during a pro-Palestine protest outside the Texas State Capitol building on October 29th, 2023, serves as a contemporary manifestation of the enduring principles that have guided the labor movement throughout history. At its heart, a young white man, wearing a cowboy hat, passionately leads the rally’s chants, wielding a microphone to amplify the collective voice. This image becomes a powerful symbol of the enduring spirit of the labor movement, inviting viewers to critically reflect on the historical struggles for worker rights and dignity. The diverse individuals in the crowd symbolize the inclusivity that has been a hallmark of the labor movement, urging us to engage in critical consciousness about the intersections of race, class and labor rights. The cowboy hat, transcending its cultural context, acts as a metaphorical bridge, connecting the contemporary protest to the formidable force that labor unions and collective action represent today. This traditional emblem of Texas transforms into more than a cultural symbol; it becomes a tool for critical reflection on the diverse voices within our community uniting for a common cause. The protest elements draw striking parallels to historical labor movements, emphasizing the enduring spirit that has indelibly shaped our socio-economic landscape. This photograph captures a powerful convergence of past and present, encouraging viewers to approach it with a critical consciousness, illustrating the ongoing struggle and resilience inherent in the labor movement’s journey.

This image serves as a representation of the frequent chaos and unpredictability of non-unionized workplaces. Nonunion workers represent only themselves; everyone holds their pawn, rolling the dice daily without knowing where they will land. Workplaces have the right to decide salary, benefits, and workplace rules – so long as it is within the law, much like gameboards do. If unsatisfied with the employer's determinations, your only option is to get another job. Workers can be fired at any time and without reason. Even under a company’s “open-door” policy, there is nothing to make anyone believe that the policy is meaningful; your role (roll) is as good as any; leave it to chance. Unsurprisingly, workers without a union are often subject to arbitrariness and unfairness. Tired of not having a say? Too bad. For nonunion workers, the bare minimum becomes a ceiling – no one promises rights any higher.

Selecting item(s) from a menu implies that the choice is based on individual preference. Much like our coffee, we generally prefer to have a say in our lives. With changes in all seasons of life, we hope the options we must choose from adapt to meet our needs and taste buds. At any point in time, when change occurs, expected or not, the needs of ourselves and our families come first. To accommodate said changes, options for our safety, well-being, and financial security must stay the same. The menu of protecting the right to life must not rotate on a seasonal basis but instead, stand as the foundation and accompany various life changes. The same may be said on a community level. Rather than dismantling a base rooted in individual choice, unionized workplaces aim to empower from within. When individuals and families feel supported within their workplace, the work ideally becomes a community-based effort to influence and advance social policy.

The aim of community practice is to empower community members to address social issues and improve their quality of life. This is achieved by identifying the needs and priorities of the community and then working together to develop and enforce strategies that address those needs. Community practice can take many forms, including community organizing, community development, and community-based research. It is a collaborative process that involves building relationships, sharing knowledge and resources, and working towards a common goal. The image displayed represents the efforts required to execute such a plan.
