Unsurprisingly, workers without a union are often subject to arbitrariness and unfairness. Tired of not having a say? Too bad. For nonunion workers, the bare minimum becomes a ceiling – no one promises rights any higher.

At any point in time, when change occurs, expected or not, the needs of ourselves and our families come first. To accommodate said changes, options for our safety, well-being, and financial security must stay the same. The menu of protecting the right to life must not rotate on a seasonal basis but instead, stand as the foundation and accompany various life changes. The same may be said on a community level. Rather than dismantling a base rooted in individual choice, unionized workplaces aim to empower from within. When individuals and families feel supported within their workplace, the work ideally becomes a community-based effort to influence and advance social policy.
