The conflict of the Mark Fossie having his girlfriend at the camp during the war was multiple battles combined in a big battle. Whether it was man v man or man v self, there was always some battle going on. In one sense, Mark Fossie v the Greenies are man v man. In another sense, it can be described as man v self because of Mark Fossie fighting with himself because he thought it was his fault that Mary Anne became that way because he brought her to the war.

The setting of the camp of the American soldiers can be described as muddy, smelly, soggy, humid, dirty, and many other grotesque adjectives. It can also be described as homey to some. Especially when Mary Anne came to the camp.

Major Events

Some major events from the story include:

1. The arrival of Mark Fossies girlfriend, Mary Anne. Her arrival improved the soldiers' morale majorly because before, the soldiers were bored and doing the same things everyday. But when Mary Anne arrived, the soldiers were happier with Mary Anne dancing and them being able to teach her different things like how to take apart a gun and how to amputate wounded soldiers.

2.The change of Mary Anne's personality took major strain on the soldiers but especially Mark Fossie, her boyfriend. Fossie almost went crazy from her change; "It's nothing,' she said "Really nothing. To tell the truth, I've never been happier in my whole life. Never."(Pg. 95) Even though Rat Kiley tried to help him, Fossie couldn't recover knowing that he had lost his girlfriend to the war.

3.The disappearance of Mary Anne was unexplained, more so by Kiley. "And then one morning, all alone, Mary Anne walked off into the mountains and did not come back"(Pg. 110) They didn't even know if she was still alive, dead, captured, nothing. She just disappeared without any warning or anything.

The biggest and most exciting event in the chapter was most definitely during Mary Anne's slow descent into the madness of the war when Mark Fossie and Rat Kiley discovered her in the Green Berets' cabin. This specific part of the chapter was the high point of it because it was the most surprising. They walk into the cabin and find Mary Anne in nice clothes and barefoot, but wearing a necklace made of copper and tongues.

Resolution of Chapter

The resolution of this chapter comes at the very end of the chapter when Mary Anne leaves the camp randomly. "And then one morning, all alone, Mary Anne walked off into the mountains and did not come back." (Pg. 110) They didn't forget her, but after that, the conflict about her dissipated within the concept of war itself and the camp.
