"I could think of nothing else to say to her. In fact I could never think of anything to say to her, and I sat thinking of past painful conversations between us"(Lee 170).

This quote shows Scout elaborating on her troubling encounters with Aunt Alexandra. Throughout this chapter, Scout offers multiple hateful opinions on her aunt. This quote contributes to that and also foreshadows a beginning of their rocky relationship.

"Aunt Alexandra managed to smile in a way that conveyed a gentle apology to Cousin Lily and firm disapproval to me. When Cousin Lily Brooke left I knew I was in for it"(Lee 176).

In this quote, Alexandra introduces a family member to Scout. This sparks the beginning of Alexandra's stress to teach the children about their family. It once again shows Alexandra trying to express her opinion on what is best for the family(in this case, what she thinks is best at the moment would be family). This quote also displays Scout dreading Alexandra's verbal lashings and disapproval.

"You really want us to do all that? I can't remember everything Finches are supposed to do." "I don't want you to remember it. Forget it." He went to the door and out of the room, shutting the door behind him. He nearly slammed it, but caught himself at the last minute and closed it softly"(Lee 179).

On page 179 of chapter 13, things are already going rocky when Atticus tries to console the kids like Alexandra had asked of him. At some point throughout his confrontation, it seems like her realizes that her opinions on his parenting couldn't matter any less. He realizes that this growing generation of Finches can never be like all of the past Finches and that they cannot be expected to act like their elders. Once he rids the children's minds of worry, he almost slams the door but instead turns back to leave them on an easier note.

"I know now what he was trying to do, but Atticus was only a man. It takes a woman to do that kind of work"(Lee 179).

Chapter 13 Reflection

Chapter 13 furthers the plot of this novel because it lights the fire and tension between family members once Alexandra comes. This chapter introduces Aunt Alexandra and shows her ways of including her opinions in nearly everything. It displays her knack of fitting in with Maycomb citizens too; one may realize why, since a great deal of Maycomb natives are set in their ways as well. This chapter is needed in the novel because without it, the character of Alexandra probably would not be recognized to be as problematic as she really is.
