She also talked about the cottage on the moor. Sometimes, Mary would read Colin stories. Later that week, Mary and Dickson build a nest for the robin. The next day Colin sends a servant to get Mary but she doesn't go because she is to focused on the garden. Colin gets mad, and then Mary gets mad and says she'll never visit him again. But then she decides that she just might come back to him. In chapters 18-20,Martha tells Mary that Colin is sick. Mary went to visit Colin before going to plant seeds with DIXON. Mary and Dixon are with Soot, Nut, Shell, and Captain. Dixon tells Mary that he took his pony Jump over to the manor. Mary tells him about Colin, and she can tell he feels sorrier for Colin than Mary. Than Dixon tells Mary, "Eh! my! we mun get him out here-we mun get him watchin' an listenin' an' sniffin' up th' air an' get him just soaked through wi' sunshine. An' we munnot lose no time about it." A little while later Mary leaves and goes back to tell Colin, she tries to speak in broad Yorkshire. It made Colin laugh. Mary asked Colin if she could trust him, and then she told him about the garden. The next day the doctor came, because every time Colin had a tantrum, the doctor had to come. But this time the doctor didn't have to stay very long, for Mary had talked to Colin and made him happy. Colin goes in the chair to the garden. Then Ben Weatherstaff comes over the wall and sees the children. Colin didn't know Ben, though, because he has never meet him. Dickson had seen Ben before. Ben claims the garden belongs to him. Early, before Mary even came to Misselwoth Manor, Colin's mom had died in that garden when she was on a tree branch and it snapped. Colin's mom had once told Ben that when she was gone or couldn't get to the garden, she wanted Ben to take care of it. Ben was now in on the secret, and Mary made sure he wouldn't tell. Colin was eating more now because he knew that now he wasn't going to die. He was complaining that he was getting fatter. Mary goes to Martha's house and helps with the cooking for dinner. Colin had spent so much time in the garden that it was starting to feel special too him. He still hadn't told his father about the garden. Colin thought that the magic would make him live forever. He was feeling so good that in the garden he stood up and shouted to the heavens, "I'm standing and well." Dickson began to sing a song about praising God. After that Colin complained about gaining 5 pounds. Martha's mom brought them food and they asked her if she believed in magic. In the last chapter of the book, it is telling what Master Craven is doing. Master Craven thinks of Colin and whether or not he should even go back to the manor. But then he gets a letter saying he should come back to the manor and see Colin, for he would be surprised. He goes back and asked where the children were. He is told they're in the garden, and he automatically knows that they found the garden. He slowly walks towards the garden and hears the distinct sound of talking and laughter. As he gets closer, it gets louder. He opened the door and sees Colin standing. He is not mad at the children, though. As he is walking back with Colin striding along by his side, he is in disbelief. She had her servant, Ayah, help her with every little thing. But, when Ayah died, she was on her own. When she went to school people made fun of her for making a garden. They sang," Mistress Mary, quite contrary, how does your garden grow? With silver bells, and cockle shells, and marigolds all in a row." Then something happened and she had to Yorkshire. When she got there, she had a servant, Martha. She was a servant but did not help Mary as much as Ayah did. Martha and Mary did get into a couple fights, but in the end it all worked out. Lastly, Mary meets a boy outside. His name was Ben Weatherstaff. Ben said to Mary that there was a secret garden. Mary was very interested in what the secret garden was. Ben also said that the secret garden had no door. This interested Mary more than before. Ben had said that the garden had been locked up for ten years. This was because Mr. Craven hated the garden. Though Mary did not know why, and Ben did not tell her why she had a feeling it was something important. She knew there was a reason. Ben had also said that there was no door to the secret garden, and this was so no one would get in. In chapters five, six, seven, eight, and nine, Mary complains how she cannot go outside because she has nothing to play with. Martha told her to go play with sticks and stones. Instead, she goes outside and starts to talk to a robin. During this she is thinking about the secret garden. The robin told her to dig in one area. So, she did. Inside that area, was a key. She wondered if it was used for the secret garden that Ben was talking about the day before. Then, the robin showed her the door to the secret garden. When she came in, there were flowers of all kinds. She made sure not to tell anyone. In chapters ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, and fourteen was Mary found Martha's brother named Dickon.  Dickon is two years older than Mary; Dickon has lived on Missel Moor his entire life and has a uniquely intimate relationship with the land. He has rosy cheeks, rough curly hair, and blue eyes precisely the same color as the sky over the moor. She learns how to dig, get dirty, and have fun from Dickon. Three chapters later, at least in my book, she meets Colin. In the middle of the night she hears crying. She goes over to the room next to her and she sees a little boy crying. He asks Mary if she was a ghost. Of course, she says no. Then the strangest thing happened. Mary asked the boy if he was a ghost. He says no, but he sounded insecure about it like he thought he was a ghost. After this, Mary was brave enough to ask the little boy what his name was. The boy said his name was Colin Craven. She realized her uncle's name was Archibald Craven. Then she put those to facts together and she got, her uncle had a kid before his wife died. Then Colin asked Mary what her name was. Colin and Mary talked until they saw the sun. Mary said to Colin she had to go unless she wanted to get in trouble. The next night she came back. In chapters fifteen sixteen and seventeen there was a week of rain, then the rain finally started to stop. When it did, there was a high arch of blue sky, from which the sun poured down. This made the garden quite hot. In this week, Mary spent most of her days with Colin in his room. She mostly talked about how in India she had a friend, and his name was Rajah. She also would talk about how the garden is going. If she was not talking about her friend in India, or the garden, she was talking about Dixon and the cottage over the moor. Once in a while, Mary would read Colin stories or try to amuse him. Later in the week, Mary goes to the garden with Dixon. Every day Mary and Dixon go to the garden, they always see a robin flying over their heads. But they always see the robin land in different places. So, Mary and Dixon decided to build the robin a nest. While Mary and Dixon are doing this, they see many roses. This reminds Mary of when she lived in India and she made a garden at recess. The next day Colin sent his servant to go get Mary so he could talk to her. Mary's response was," Tell Colin that I can't come and see him yet. I am very busy with the garden." Colin was very mad about this. He sent his servant to go and stop Mary. She resisted but whatever Colin says goes. So, she had to stay with Colin for the rest of the morning. During this the servant was laughing. Mary asked," What's so funny?" The servant explained that watching Mary and Colin was like a show. Then Colin said that she was being to rude to him so she could go work on the garden with Dixon. When Mary went over to the garden she was thinking," Perhaps, just perhaps, I will go and see if he wants me in the morning. Perhaps he will try to throw a pillow at me again, but I think I will go." She cannot decide if this was a mistake or not. In chapter 17 Mary and Colin get into a big fight, and there was yelling and hurt feelings going on in Colin's room. Martha (Colin and Mary's servant) was laughing and listening to the whole conversation. In chapters eighteen nineteen and twenty, Martha Brought Mary her breakfast and Martha said Colin told her he was quite ill and feverish as he was always after he had worn himself out with a fit of crying. As Mary ate her breakfast, she listened to what Martha said with concern. After breakfast, Mary was about to go see Dickon and then realized she should go and see if Colin was alright. She said to Martha," I'll run and see Dickon first. No, I'll go and see Colin first and tell him-I know what I'm going to tell him." When Mary appeared, Colin at first looked disappointed. The reason why he looked like this was because he was ill. Colin said," I'm so glad you came. My head aches and I ache all over because I'm so tired. Are you going somewhere?" Colin asked. Mary had her winter hat on. Mary explained that she was going to go hang out with Dickon and work on the garden. Colin loves the garden, so he was excited about this. Mary and Dickon had a great time. Earlier in the book, Mary made a new friend. His name was Ben Weatherstaff. Mary has only told Colin and Dicken. She has not told Ben Weatherstaff or Martha. She hasn't even told her uncle yet. When she was done outside, hanging out with Dicken and Ben, she went into Colin's room and started to talk with him. She talked about what she did with Dicken and what they did. She talked about gardening the roses and planting flowers. Then she talked about Ben Weatherstaff. Colin was very interested in what she had to say. Colin wanted to meet Ben ever since he heard of him. the next day the doctor said Colin was unable to walk any more. He also said that he had a big hump in his back. In this chapter Mary picks up the Yorkshire accent and Colin was quite fascinated in it. Colin begged Mary to take him to some fresh air. Mary said he was not ready. Colin has not got out of his bed for about 3 months, so he forgot how to walk. The lump in his back didn't help him walk either. after Mary goes back inside, she said," spring has command tells them spring has come." The next day Dickon came to meet Colin. He came into the house and talked to Colin for a while. Colin was so glad he finally could meet Dickon. Dickon convinced Colin that he will live forever. Colin believed him and now was confident that he would live. In chapters twenty-one, twenty-two, and twenty-three, Colin still believes that he will live forever. Colin was in his wheelchair while Mary, and Dickon push him to go to the garden and they find a surprise that no one was expected. The surprise was not a very good surprise. From the beginning of the book there was a character named Ben Weatherstaff. Ben Weatherstaff was a character that was friends with Mary in the first few chapters. He was in the middle of climbing over the secret garden's wall. Colin did not know who Ben was because he had only heard about him not actually seen him. Dickon, on the other hand, had seen Ben walking around. Ben said that the garden was his. In the beginning of the book, Colin's Mom, Mary's Aunt, dies. The garden use to belong to Colin mom. Ever since she died Colin's dad locked up the garden because whenever he would see it, it would remind him of her, and he would be sad. So, he locked up the garden. The garden had been locked up for ten years until Mary and Dickon found it and unlocked it. Before she died, she had told Ben to keep the garden in order. So, he told them that he climbed the wall every day just to keep it in order. Mary asked Ben to keep the garden in order. Mary makes sure he won't go off and tell anyone. Ben said he promise he won't, because it is his secret too. In the next chapter, Ben helps Mary, Colin, and Dickon with the garden. Colin was in his wheelchair while this happened. Then Mary told Colin that he should stand up, and that it is easier to walk from the roses to the trees than to go in a wheelchair. They worked on the garden until the sun went down. In chapter 23, Colin tells his doctor that he could walk again this was a big moment for Colin. In chapters twenty-four and twenty-five, Mary and Dickon had noticed that now that Colin was eating more since he realized that he was going to live not die. In the beginning of the book when Mary went to see Colin in the middle of the night because she heard screaming in the room next to her. In this scene, she met Colin for the first time. Her impression was that he was like six years. He was actually the same age as Mary.  Because he did not know how to walk, and he thought he was going to die. He also thought at the time that he was going to die so there was no point in eating. He got more confident, so he started to eat more. He kept complaining about how he was getting fatter, but it was actually him getting to the size Mary was. Mary was very skinny for her age.  Mary went to help Martha and Dickon's family. They help their family by cooking dinner for them. Colin had been in his mom's garden for so long and had helped make it his own garden. The garden was very special to Colin just as it was to Colin's mother.  Colin still has not told his father about the garden yet. The chapter twenty six was called It's Mother. Colin still believed in magic. The magic was that he was going to live "forever." He was still glad about this. Inside the garden, Colin was standing and had just yelled, "I'm standing and well!" He was so glad about this. Dickon started to sing in a strong voice that everyone could hear. He sang this,"Praise God from whom all blessings flow,Praise Him all creatures here below, Praise Him above ye Heavenly Host, praise Father, Son, and holy ghost. Amen." Colin was very impressed. So was Ben and Mary. After he sang this song, Colin started to complain about how he had gained five pounds. Then, Dickon's mom comes and gives Dickon, Mary, and Colin food. Then Colin asked Mrs. Mendlock, Dickon and Martha's mom, If she believed in magic. Mrs. Mendlock said that she has believed in magic since the was five years old. Colin did not trust Mrs. Mendlock until she said that she believed in magic. He just began to believe that she was good. He also got the feeling she was good when she brought him, Dickon, and Mary food. In chapter twenty seven Colin's dad comes home while Mary are in the garden then Collins dad wants to go into the garden but Collin hears him and runs out hugging him which is a surprise because his dad did not know he could walk. Colin never told his own dad that he could walk.
