I think students are so engaged with the fictional text that making claims and supporting them with reasons has been easy.

It's not all sunshine though. Teaching a lesson today on evidence showed a number of issues with student work as they try to quote with relevant information and to place quotes in context. They want to automatically label reasons as examples. I also have noticed that students will try to label the claim as a reason, usually because claims found in articles include a reason(s) within the claim itself.
