A hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration. Sadie uses a hyperbole when describing the height of the building she was in. Sadie said, "Double rows of stone pillars held up the ceiling. It was so high you could have parked a blimp under it with no trouble,"(Riordan 158). A simile is a figure of speech used to compare to unlike things using like or as. Sadie Kane uses a simile when describing the luxurious carpet in front of her. Sadie describes it like this, "A shimmering blue carpet that looked like water ran down the center of the hall. It was so long I couldn't see the end even though it was brightly lit," (Riordan 158). Sadie uses another simile when talking about Carter by saying, "Carter had been hopelessly out of touch. He'd dressed like a junior executive, in crisp white shirts and slacks," (Riordan 52). Sadie uses another simile when describing her fight against a few gods in London. She describes one part of the battle, " I touched my staff to the chalk, and golden light flared up. The baboon god slammed into my force field like it was a metal wall. He staggered backward," (Riordan 132). Verbal irony is the term used in literature to describe when a character is being sarcastic, meaning they say one thing but mean the opposite. Sadie Kane uses verbal irony when she says this, "Breaking into a museum. We've had such good luck with that." (Riordan 153). In the previous book, Sadie and her magician companions tried breaking into a museum and ended up getting her father killed and releasing dozens of Egyptian gods. Also, earlier in this story, they failed at breaking into a Brooklyn museum and ended up setting half of Brooklyn on fire.

This novel is full of symbols and motifs. The motif of chaos is constantly recurring throughout the story. Snakes in this story are the most common symbols. They appear to strike fear into the protagonist. The snakes also represent Chaos because the god of Chaos, Apophis, is a snake.

Rick Riordan uses multiple motifs throughout this novel. The main motif he uses in this novel is chaos. This novel is completely chaotic because the characters only have one job to complete but it just keeps getting more and more complicated as they run into enemies they did not even know they had. They also must complete many different missions on the side while trying to complete the main mission of defeating Apophis. Snakes are a consistent symbol of chaos in this novel. They only appear in the novel to cause trouble, deliver evil messages, or attempt to kill everyone and destroy the world in the case of Apophis.

The image below is a picture of Carter and Sadie Kane about to attack Apophis. This pictures is related to the motif and symbol. The motif of the story is chaos and Apophis is the god of chaos. The main symbol used to portray chaos throughout the story is a snake. Apophis represents the symbol perfectly because he is a snake.

There are many different characters in this story. Some of the characters are gods, some are human, and some are demi-gods. It can be very difficult to follow along in this story. It is easy to mix up different characters and hard to tell at some times who is the strongest. I created this list to help people understand who the strongest characters are and to eliminate all confusion. The picture below relates to my list because it contains 9 of the 10 strongest characters (Ra is missing).

Ra is the strongest. He is the only one who can defeat Apophis. Apophis is the second strongest because Ra is the only one strong enough to defeat him. Horus is the third strongest because he is the god of war and can defeat any enemy besides Apophis, who Horus himself admitted, would be a tough opponent and would most likely be too strong. Bast is the fourth strongest because she fought Apophis every day for many years while Apophis was imprisoned. Bast could never come close to defeating Apophis but could tire him out. Amos is the smartest magician alive and he said that the 5th strongest is Desjardins, 6th strongest is himself, and 7th strongest is Vlad the Inhaler, Desjardins "side kick". Bes, the dwarf god, is the 8th strongest because he was put in place to protect the Kane family and helps Carter and Sadie defeat Vlad the Inhaler. Carter is the 9th strongest because he still contains some leftover power from Horus, the god of war. Sadie is the 10th strongest because she still contains some leftover power from Isis, the god of magic and life.
