Aldo Moro was born in Maglie, in the Province of Lecce, in southern Italy. He attended college at the University of Bari, and would later serve as the president of the Italian Catholic Federation of University Students at the behest of Giovanni Battista Montini, who would later become Pope Paul VI. This meeting between the two would spark a lifelong friendship. In 1943, he joined Christian Democracy, a newly founded big-tent political party in Italy. He would remain a member of Christian Democracy till his death in 1978. Christian Democracy would be the largest party in Italy from 1946 until it was dissolved in 1994.

Citation: Britannica, The Editors of Encyclopaedia.

Aldo Moro was first elected to the Chamber of Deputies in 1948 as a Christian Democrat and would serve in Italy’s parliament until his death in 1978. His first major position in parliament came in 1955 when he was appointed Minister of Justice. Aldo Moro would become Prime Minister of Italy in 1963 after Christian Democracy negotiated a coalition with the Socialist Party of Italy. Moro would return to the office of Prime Minister in 1974 and would serve until 1976. Moro during this time was supportive of allowing the Communist Party of Italy to participate in future governments, as they had just received a third of the vote in 1976. In 1978, Moro would be kidnapped by Communist terrorists and assassinated--this assassination would precipitate the end of the ‘historic compromise’ between Christian Democracy and the Italian Communists.

Britannica, The Editors of Encyclopaedia.
