The story of Antigone takes place in Greece a long long time ago. It is around the and primarily in the city of Thebes. This is happening at the time that the society of Greek had hierarchical structures. This is when the male rulers had all the power and everything went through them. Women did not have freedom to all rights which is why they had limited rights. While in the other story of Home Fire Isma is set to be in Britain. This is where we learned a lot about British Muslims and really got to look at their lives up close. We also get to see what it is to have trust and tension, with individual beliefs and National loyalty. The time of this story takes time in a more modern era where we see immigration, terrorism, and Islamophobia happening. After 9/11 Muslims, especially those from ethnic minorities, can be found throughout Britain. This really dives into the difficulties of national and religious identities.

Antigone struggles with society because she is a woman in ancient Greece. This is due to the fact that women from Greece did not have freedom to do any and everything that they pleased.Women were supposed to live up to what the male rulers wanted and that was being submissive. Her family identity is one of the most important things about Antigone. She is a sister to Polynices and Eteocles, While also being the daughter of Odiepus. Her actions throught the story reflect back on her family's bloodline and her duty she serves her family as responsibility that she takes on. Isma on the other hand in her story As a women she faces challenges of being a women and religion beliefs. When her mother dies she begins the role of a caretaker because her mother died and her father has left. She takes on the role to look after her siblings. Isma is a British Muslim which she is part of a minority group in Britain. She takes on difficult task and having to go through Islamophobia and racism. “the world is a different place when you’re in it alone,” WHich showed what it was like to be her British identity but also her heritage.

Antigone in her story is obviously at the beginning by being very powerlessness. This is due to the fact that The society of Greek and how it was ran. Woman did had little to none big public roles. Their ideas or decisions were often overlooked by men a second time. Her power starts to become shown and we see why. Her religious identity and her family's bloodline. She does this by appealing the divine law that was therefore set by the gods and believe that they are more important. Instead of laws established by men. Even though it doesn't end in a great way, the belief she has in familial responsibility to her deceased brother elevates her power in the face of injustice by providing a moral foundation for her actions. Isma as a Muslim living in Britain after 9/11, both identities affect how she looks at the world and contribute to her sense of helplessness. Isma struggles with Islamophobia as a Muslim woman, which honestly I believe limits her options and influences how other people view her. She knows that people look at her differently and understands that because of her race and her religion of course. Like when the story said "There was always a pause when someone saw her, a slight hesitation in the handshake" (Shamsie, Home Fire). She feels helpless in an environment that sees her as a different kind because of the way she looks. However, Isma's position as her family's eldest daughter provides her with Her strength is shown when you see her take on the role of taking care of her younger siblings. This also does ieffect her as she says , "She was always the one who had to take the burden of family responsibility," She found that it was not easy to llive her personal life and be able to take on her family's needs.. There is tension between power and helplessness . This happens because she takes on her family's caregiver and her desire for freedom.

The Home Fire Story book describes the life of a Pakistani Muslim family in London. After the death of their mother.The eldest daughter, Isma, took responsibility for looking after her younger siblings. Isma's life was good untill takes her brother Parvaiz makes a mistake and joins a terrorist group. Isma makes a connection with Eamonn, a British politician's son. they learn that his father has a voice in the political decisions that affect her family in the meantime. The novel explores issues of loyalty, identity, and the consequences of familial commitment in the context today's political problems around Islam and terrorism. Antigone starts in a ancient city called Thebes in Greek. The plot of the play centers on Antigone, Oedipus's daughter, who disobeys King Creon's decision to leave her brother Polynices unburied. This is when Antigone family responsibilities and the laws of the gods are more important than state regulations. Her act to protest results was smart but ended up being a bad chain of events, including the murders of her fiancé Haemon (Creon's son) and his mother Eurydice, as she is imprisoned and given a death sentence. The conflict between state and individual power, the effects of moral decisions, and civic disobedience are all topics covered in the play.

In the story of Antigone , Antigone's social standing puts her in a not so great situation honestly. This is because her authority is restricted because of her gender and rules that are set already in Greek.. The society is ruled by men. She doesn't have much authority as a woman, but she possesses a special kind of power because of her strong sense of duty and rejection of King Creon. But in the end her moral conviction and familial loyalty put her against the state, rendering her practically helpless as she risks death for her convictions. Due to her gender and of course her race , race Isma from Home Fire finds herself in a position of helplessness. The culture does not treat her right and She experiences social and cultural discrimination in the UK.This is due to the fact that she is a Muslim woman of Pakistani heritage. I loved that She sacrifices her own goals to raise her siblings and takes on that role of caregiver in her family. Isma's status as an immigrant makes it difficult for her to really flourish into British society.Also her relationship with her brother's not good choices makes others look at her and not have faith. She is belessed and also very lucky due to the society she lives in that she has power because of the knowledge and the bloodline of family she has..

If I could choose one character it would be Creon, the king of Thebes, . He has a lot of power because of his social identity as a male monarch. He commands respect and authority because he is the king, . His position as state ruler puts him to therefore compete with Antigones family ties. He then enforces Thebes' laws even if it means denying his nephew the funeral rights. His strong and strict following of the rules causes him to lose sight of his family's necessities, which ultimately leads to his collapse.Another important character in Home Fire is Karamat Lone. His background as an immigrant turned public figure. His authority as a British Pakistani politician define his social identity. Karamat'sfocus to get high up on politics has caused him to become more detached from his religious and cultural heritage. Being a high-ranking government official gives him authority. Also being a Muslim immigrant in the UK puts him in a difficult situation where he must balance his need to make amends with the British society which I find intresting. He aligns himself with political positions that don't match his heritage.
