Until a few days ago, America didn't have Texas! In April of 1846, a war was announced because of land and whose it was. Going into the war, America believed it would be easy to defeat Mexico, but they were wrong. The war went on for 2 years or so, many dying, because both Mexico and the US along with James Polk believed they should have the land. The land they were fighting over was called the Mexican cession and Texas. A few years before the war the Mexicans invited the US in with a few rules, to become catholic, to become a citizen, and stop using slaves. America disobeyed and tried taking the land away from Mexico. Finally, after a couple years of fighting, Santa Anna, who was the president of Mexico, retreated. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was drawn up, giving America all of Texas and the Mexican cession. We kindly invited them into our land. Our only conditions were to have them become a Mexican citizen, become Catholic, and not bring slave. They utterly disobeyed. Eventually they tried claiming the land for themselves. Then they tried to get our land they called Tejas made into a US state! I was in disbelief and called war. Like I said, America was obviously destined to move west from, and that is what happened. We have taken what is ours and will now run with the privilege of moving west to prosper. The Mexican government was letting us come to land called Tejas.
