Growing up in the southern ports of war torn Somalia in the early 80s, technology was never heard of besides simple things like radios and the rare phone a rather well traveled and well off country men would have. And when it came to the classroom, blackboards and chalk was the standard.

Into the New World

When immigrating into America in the late 90s, the technology my parents encountered was the most shocking. Besides the large TV's in every American living room, video games taking children by storm, and cars coming out with advanced features, they where most shocking to encounter a small, travel sized phone. Even when going to English school, they would see their teachers in the classroom with their phones easily in their pockets, common place, and just as easily accessible. Of all things to be shocked by, right?

Growing up, my sister always hated school. She was always the quiet kid who didn't speak much English. Often times, she would come home crying to my mother not to take her back. But my mother would always convince her to go because of one thing, the schools computer lab. It was my favorite too growing up. Playing computer games with friends for a whole hour has its perks. I guess being an iPad kid isn't exclusive to just an iPad, or even just to Gen Alpha.

I remember when I first transferred schools half way through elementary, and my best friend came with me! I didn't notice much of a difference from the new school to the old, except it was probably a tad bit more newer, but my best friend was always shocked about the lack of wall mounted pencil sharpeners! Every classroom was equipped with an electric one (that definitely sharpened better than the hand cranked one). I supposed it didn't have much influence to our education besides being able to sit down faster, but it did certainly make us feel very bougie!

I think receiving my first school issues laptop back in high school was a mark of higher education for me. It felt prestigious, esteemed, important. I felt like one of those highly intelligent ivy league kids who sat and studied in cafes and read poetry in their free time. Looking back...its kinda embarrassing. Receiving a personal laptop didn't really make me a better or worse student in the classroom, but it sure was fun to have!

Leaving high school was tough, but leaving from my schools esports team was even tougher. The team profoundly shaped our experience even in the classroom (we had to keep up a certain GPA just to play). The technology we used not only honed our strategic thinking but also improved our problem-solving skills (again, something useful id find in or out of the classroom). I’ll never forget our final match against our rival school before graduation. Every moment was charged with emotion, every play a testament to our hard work. It was a nail-biting game, but through it all, we stayed focused and, eventually, we won in the end.
