I create group email contacts by class period and every 2-3 weeks I send each class of parent/guardians an email. I try and highlight what we are covering in class, fun examples of student contribution, and mention upcoming projects, tests, etc. This seems to facilitate positive communication from the beginning and also seems to deter the all-famous incidents of parents getting vocal at the last hour about a student's grade or missing assignments.

It's really amazing how a simple quick chat during drop-off or pickup can get across information about a student to the parent. Think of it like the 'Elevator speech' where you have 30 seconds to sell yourself to a potential employer. The urgency of keeping the car line moving gets both people straight to the point and you communicate really effectively in that short time period.

-Andy B

Hayden Hughes
I try to call all of my students parents at the beginning of the school year to introduce myself. It's a good way for me to speak with them about what my class will be about and what my expectations are for the school year. It also allows me to start building a relationship with the parent and show that it's not always a bad thing for the school to call them. I also use ClassDojo in my class to help keep the parents involved throughout the year.

Positive contacts have gone a long way for me. While I am still a BT, I have seen a big difference in my classroom management based on my first group of kids to my 3rd group. I did not have much parent contact my first year, but now I make a point to reach out to parents with positive calls. Kids appreciate a good phone call home and it can make a big difference in how the kids act in your room. I have also seen some growth in student engagement.

I sent home an info sheet with my Classroom Syllabus/Contract to all my students on the first week of school with all my contact information, along with a code and link to my Remind App. On Remind, every Monday I post an announcement with my weekly layout and if there are assignments. If you don't know what Remind is, it is an app designed for teachers and parents to effectively communicate with each other. It is a great, quick, and easy way for you to stay in contact with parents AND for parents to get in contact with you!

These phone calls especially can be difficult for both teachers and parents. I suggest having a script and running it by your other grade level team members. Also, have a list of possible questions and answers that could come up!
-Lauren M
