Civics is Knowledge, and Knowledge is Power:

This is one of the most important concepts in civics because applying knowledge of the country, politics, and citizen powers can lead to a better place. Many people are not aware of the power they hold due to lack of knowledge. For example, it’s a common belief that voting is not important and that a single vote does not matter. It’s difficult to understand what you can do and what must be done if you do not know what is going on or why things are the way they are. Learning about the history, foundations, and purpose of the government provided me with a starting point for my journey of helping to improve this country (when I’m considered an adult).

Assignment 5.11 (adamf_5.11) is an analysis essay about the book “Yertle The Turtle”. This is a good demonstration of my understanding of this concept because the book covers a lot of topics that are a reality. The fact that it takes one person to cause change, the foundation of government, the principles of our government and the purpose of the government are all included in my analysis of the book.

The rights of citizens in the US have limitations. This is so we are all considerate of each other and know that there are consequences to our actions. We also have responsibilities which includes obeying the law. Imprisonment is an example of a consequence for not living within the limitations of your rights as a citizen. I selected this concept because it’s so natural to a lot of people (including me) that it’s easy to forget, but it’s very important because there would be chaos without it. We sacrifice our natural right to be inconsiderate to others in order to live with each other with reduced fear.

A great demonstration of my understanding of this topic is assignment 5.2 (adamf_5.2) which is an essay about the limitations of rights. I analyzed the quote “The right to swing my fist ends where the other man’s nose begins” by Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr and compared it to wearing masks.
Civics is Double-Checking, and Double-Checking Allows Adjustments:

There are a lot of verifications involved in the politics of our country. Or government has checks and balances (e.g. judicial review) which are basically ways to verify that the government isn’t doing extremely unethical things. However, it does not take a professional to recognize when something is wrong. The government isn’t always right, so citizens can also double check their performance and call them out on it. This has been done throughout history, which is why we now have the Constitution and not only the Bill of Rights. Nowadays, this is most commonly done by creating organizations, groups, and protesting. I chose this concept because it’s a common theme that I’ve seen throughout every unit of this course as well as recent events. For example, people are now protesting about the possible overturning of Roe v Wade which shows how people can call out the government to cause change.

Assignment 4.11 (adamf_4.11) was a presentation about landmark cases and is a good demonstration of my understanding of this concept. This is because I had to research a single case (Brown v. Board of Education) that began with the dissatisfaction of a certain law being enacted by citizens. The conclusion also made a huge adjustment in the country.

While I did not do any extra credit, unfortunately, it can really help your grade. This way, sometimes if you genuinely cannot turn in an assignment on time, the extra credit can make up for the few points that are taken off for that assignment. It may also improve your understanding of a topic. Also, try to remember that the focus of assignments are more on explaining your understanding. There were a lot of times where I overcomplicated assignments that were not really that difficult. Now of course, still do what is asked, but just remember that demonstrating your understanding is the main reason for it. And use the feedback you receive to do better on upcoming assignments!
