         <description><![CDATA[<div>ETS2B - Influence of Science, Engineering, and Technology on Society and the Natural World, is so significant to teach students. implementing the discussions about these issues that students may not even know is prominent in their everyday lives to show students what they live and experience. Especially in today's society, children are surrounded and put in front of technology. Human life would not exist without technology. Young elementary school students may not know that some everyday products are pieces of technology but I also think that these students will become aware and informed about their choices later in life. Just introducing various technologies in human life such as cutlery to then later in their educational careers to talk about manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation. I think that introducing these topics to students at a young age can be appropriate and beneficial to our society. This even applies to teaching Thanksgiving history to young children. I agree that you do not have to tell the harsh horror details to these young students, but integrate the idea that the Thanksgiving dinner wasn't exactly how it was made out to be. I believe that this is such a fun and easy way to integrate science into the classroom. You can have the table groups or make your own groups of students who can work together and build communicative skills. Students love to use their hands and actively participate in the lesson and try it themselves. I think they will love this experiment because it seems so simple and easy, with everyday supplies but will be challenged in ways they never thought they would. I think that they will like this challenge a lot and it will be one they remember throughout all of their years of school. Multiple iterations would definitely help with this project. If the boat failed, then you can try again and again to try and make the boat float. Or if you want to make it stronger to hold more pennies you can make a thicker and more dense boat. Or you can make a boat without looking at a real boat and then use boat designs to help produce your own design. Students can make a prediction on how many pennies it will hold based on the old design vs. the new design. You can ask questions to help prompt students to improve. This can include "What could you change to help your boat hold more pennies? What do you think would happen if your boat was bigger or smaller? Where can you place your pennies to help your boat hold more?" These questions can help students think more critically and help with the improvement of the boat design. However, the only way to see if this works and to improve this design is to continuously work and improve it. The students can analyze where they went wrong in their previous design or try to improve it by making it stronger. The students would analyze their previous design, then implement it, then restest the design and identify the problems, and then evaluate and review their results. Doing this to any product makes the product better and better and makes improvement of the design and revision process easier each time.&nbsp;My boat is a shape of a square and it held 37 pennies and then began to slowly sink. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The influence of science, engineering, and technology on society and the natural world is impacting the world. It is imperative to show students that the world has changed over time. As you are designing projects, it shows that you are applying some knowledge of the natural world and using resources around to create/design new materials. Adding science, technology, agriculture, transportation, etc has a direct impact on the earth. As we ponder about that today, we need to realize that we are weighing costs and benefits but keeping an eye out for risks. The video mentioned that science and engineering will have an impact on our lives, but they will also have an impact on us. In today’s world, elementary students may not know much about the products they encounter every day. However, I feel it is worthwhile to start bringing in that idea for them to think about. By introducing technology, we can introduce these topics to these young students. Nowadays, schools provide kids with chrome books, to either work on in school or to take home for homework/reading. Technology can increase engagement, improve knowledge retention, motivate, collaborate, and so much more in the classroom. As well as being beneficial for teachers. But you want to highlight that technology requires natural resources. Technology does have some pros for the environment such as recycling, reduction in carbon dioxide, and so on. However, there are some cons when it comes to technology like the depletion of natural resources, air pollution, and so on. We are using our knowledge to help people live better lives and solve various problems in society. There are so many ways you can implement this in a classroom. When I was a kid, we did a balloon-powered car challenge, where we had to design and build a balloon-powered car using materials from around the house, to see how far and fast it could go. Think about the air pressure inside the balloon. The air pressure and the balloon that had stretched out stored potential energy which turned into kinetic energy as we let go of the balloon. I think this was a very helpful short lesson plan to learn how there are many different ways potential energy is stored and how kinetic energy bounces off it. As well as comparing each student's use of resources used to design the balloon car. With this, students can make use of different materials to draw their ideas out. Connecting them while also thinking of ways you can make it faster than the rest of your class.<strong>&nbsp;</strong></div>]]></description>

         <title>Shelter Building Activity</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think this is a super cute engineering lesson to do with elementary school kids! It gives an intriguing backstory to get the kids engaged and relating to the content, and sparks their creativity by allowing them to use whatever materials they purchase to their benefit. I also loved how it engaged in some math as well by giving the kids a budget and teaching them to make the most of their money by getting supplies based on their price.&nbsp;I think multiple iterations could help enrich this lesson--maybe by giving the students two families they need to shelter within one structure to challenge them to build a larger shelter. Overall, I think this is a great engineering lesson to get kids engaged and thinking about engineering in a fun and relatable way!</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think it is so important to emphasize in our classrooms how science, engineering and technology are integral parts of our society and the functioning of a civilization. Giving students that mindset and contextualizing their classroom learning through the outside world gives so much more meaning to their curriculum and reminds them that the things they are learning are truly relevant beyond the classroom walls. Personally, I always felt so much more engaged and excited by my learning in the classroom when I felt that what my learning is relevant to me in my own life, rather than just something I need to memorize. Giving students this meaning and relevance will ultimately enrich the classroom environment and help students to extract deeper learning.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After watching this week's video, one of the things that stood out to me specifically about EST2B was the idea that science and engineering are always changing our experiments and results, but we as people are also changing engineering and science. Just as much as science and engineering has influence over us, we have influence over it. Ever wonder why science is always changing? As we discussed in our educational research class, science and engineering are developing with the world that is changing around it. The world is constantly changing and undergoing developments in day-to-day life, economics, technology, and nature. Much of the technology and engineering have been developed in order for us to thrive. Prosthetic Party is a great example of a lesson to show how advanced engineering has become to allow us to thrive and advance in medicine. When I originally created the prosthetic I just picked up what I had lying around the house to create something quickly. However, having multiple&nbsp;iterations of this model and lesson could more closely relate to the actual process of how in the medical field, engineering takes time to create prosthetics. Factors such as the severity of the injury, comfortability, the structure and functionality of a prosthetic, flexibility, permanent or removable, and even what materials should be used for a prosthetic to function best take time. I think for students to have the time and proper materials to create various models allows them to work through possible scenarios in the real world and be able to see the process of trial and error. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This is such a different activity and STEM activity that I would have never thought or searched up. This is such a different and cool activity for students to try to make medical advances. This might spark something in student's minds and create an interest in something that they would have never thought of. I honestly did not think of prosthetics being an activity for students to do. They can create any prosthetic that they want and they can look at models of real ones that medical professionals use. Students can pick one type and then can try to make it as close as possible to the real one. Students could try to make multiple versions of this throughout the unit and have feedback from other groups. I think that this would be a great activity after learning about prosthetics and the functions of them and what goes into them. After learning and asking questions about these prosthetics, they could try to make one that represents a prosthetic as close as possible. The teacher and the students could give back feedback to the students who created their prosthetics. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I love this activity because of how equitable and easy this is to do in any school class. Students can use their creative skills in both STEM and also literacy skills. Kids can be extremely creative with this activity and make a variety of designs. I think it would be great for students to see a variety of different shelters that people use throughout various regions of the world. From looking at these different shelters, students can pick ones that they want to emulate and create based off of the supplies that the teacher provides. The teacher can use these common household items in the class for everyone to participate in. This makes students think about how these shelters were built despite environmental factors and what if certain environmental factors occurred... would the shelter stay up?</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This is such a cute challenge to do with the class that could really be worked with students across all age groups. I feel like despite your age or your gender, watching this little car zoom across the classroom would be engaging for all. I like how you have to use household items so students do not feel the need to go out and buy things on their own. They are challenged with the items they already own and already have to create something that can make their car go fast. You can make this simplistic for elementary school students, but then bring this up all the way into junior year of high school when they are learning about physics and ask them to make this and explain their reasoning based on the content they have learned. This can be universally designed for any age group which I love. I also think that it would be fun to race the cars against each other and then challenge each other to improve the cars in two different ways so they can beat the other team. However, they can only choose two different things to change and improve. They will have to determine which is the most important and which they will all agree with as a team. I think this would be super fun or students can choose one thing to improve once a week after learning more about the topic.</div>]]></description>

         <title>Paper Airplane Stem Challenge</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Creating paper airplanes is a great STEM challenge activity that would work really great in the classroom. This is something that can be easily done with just some paper, and it’s very engaging. Students learn about planes and how they fly, aerodynamics, and how these things are affected by the build of the plane. It will also keep the students interested, as working in a school has showed me that children love making these and flying them around anyway.&nbsp;<br></strong><br></div><div><strong>Multiple iterations would definitely help. I noticed when I was completing the lesson myself, I had made one that was very heavy in the front and didn’t go very far before landing when thrown. Going through the process again, I was able to plan and create a new one that wasn’t like this, and flew much farther. Multiple iterations like this allow students a chance to step back from their work and improve it, similarly to how I did. These airplanes can be made in many different ways, and it’s important for the students to learn through trial and error which designs are more efficient than others. Overall, I think this would make a great STEM lesson in a classroom. -Angelina<br></strong><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think classroom's emphasis on science and engineering as relevant to our society is super important. All of these ideas are all around us in the technology we use everyday. Not only is technology in our cell phones and computers, but we see technological advances in our kitchen appliances, cars or even our toothbrushes. Students need to be able to draw these connections between their everyday environments and relate it back to their interdisciplinary studies like in science class. They become much more engaged when discussions are relevant to their own lives, rather than something they see themselves as irrelevant. I also liked the video we watched in how it said that while technology affects us, we also affect it. He discussed human impact, like our exponential increase in population, as having implications on the earth's resources. This knowledge is important for students to feel like they make a difference on the world, and helps them learn science as being everywhere. Overall, talking about STEM as purposeful in their lives will engage them much more and allow them to have a deeper understanding.-Angelina&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Hi Cassidy, this is such an interesting STEM lesson and something I've never seen before! I would've never thought to have children make prosthetics like this, but there's a huge learning aspect to it that I would've never considered. Like you mentioned, this activity would be great in allowing students to have multiple chances to factor in things like injury severity, flexibility, and materials. Having many that are actually in use in the medical field also gives students a model to compare from, assessing what works well in real ones and reflecting it in their work. Doing something like this helps the students relate to medical professionals, and might even spark an interest for a future career.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Hi Bailey, I love this lesson and think it's such a good way of helping students learn social studies, science and math! Giving students money to budget their supplies is an excellent way to incorporate math while still making it fun. Students would also be super engaged in the lesson that way as it would make them feel like an adult and engage in making real world connections. I also think multiple iterations would assist in considering other factors, like if rain were to fall on the house, or if it would still be held up in wind. It'll create a discussion on what materials work best for conditions outside. I agree that classes are much more engaging and exciting to learn in when they relate to me personally, rather than just something irrelevant. It's much harder to focus when you're being lectured at about seemingly pointless topics, rather than something interesting.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Hi Arianna, I think this is a really interesting lesson for elementary students to learn STEM. Experiments like these allow students to carefully use the materials they have to create something of use in real life. I like that you mentioned about multiple trials assisting in keeping the boat afloat or stronger. There's endless possibilities of ways that students can design their boats, and it'd be fun to have them compare and contrast them as well when they're finished, incorporating a language arts skill as well. Connections to the real world also engages students more and keeps them curious throughout the lesson, producing better results. I also really like what you mentioned about teaching Thanksgiving history to young children in comparison to this lesson, and I agree that it's essential to use it as a way to compare to teaching technology and science.          <description><![CDATA[<div>Hi Bailey. I agree and was intrigued that the lesson incorporated both aspects of math and science. The idea of planing to do multiple iterations to enrich the lesson allows for a more realistic model. In life, not only one shelter will be built at a time for a single family. Giving students the opportunity to see possible real world scenarios and challenge them with money, limited supplies, or amount of people gets them thinking like an engineer. This lesson is also a great way to integrate how engineering impacts society and civilization. It is great to remind students and get then thinking about civilization, worldly factors, that may affect the models they create and why. It allows them to think with the model. I also like how you mentioned that the lesson will give meaning and relevance to the lesson because they are so engaged, instead of just throwing information in their face to memorize.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Hi Angelina, I thought your lesson was a great way to show the function and structure of a bigger real life thing with readily available tools. The purpose of a model is to scale real world examples in the classroom, and for students gain knowledge about their questions in life, much like engineers. They are able to ask questions about an airplane, create a model, and answer their questions with their creation. I agree it would be great to do multiple iterations to help students create multiple models. If they fail at first, they must go back and evaluate their models to answer questions about how to make an airplane fly. Why do airplanes fly? The a plane is structured to fly! This is a great lesson to enrich students on the purpose of structuring airplanes a certain way to ensure it functions, and practice their science, as well as math. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>1) I think ETS2B is extremely important. Younger kids are the new up and coming generation of society, and it is their job to gain knowledge on how they can help the environment and to start making changes asap. Tackling real world problems can make learning more meaningful to students. Real world examples provide concrete applications to knowledge and skills learned in the classroom as they relate to students themselves and society. Real examples also encourage students to be aware of the choices they make and how they fit into a greater societal context. Teaching engineering and technology helps students develop critical thinking and team building skills. This provides a platform for STEM. Technology provides students with easy access to information (accelerated learning). It also allows for fun opportunities to practice what they learn.&nbsp;However, technology has led to pollution and the depletion of natural resources. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think ETS2B is so important and should be implemented in every classroom at the elementary level. It would be very beneficial for elementary students to get exposed to real world issues and topics but in a fun and engaging way. Students can then take experiments such as the watercraft experiment and relate it to their own real world experiences they have had as well as problems that can be solved based on the model that was created. It is also important for students to get accustomed to using technology during their early development in school due to how prominent and critical it is in our world today.&nbsp;I think this would be a very fun experiment to perform in the classroom! It can not only promote engineering and science, but also social and team work skills that are also critical to develop at the elementary age. I think multiple iterations would help with this experiment because of being able to give students multiple attempts at an experiment if their first one wasn't successful. This will also promote problem solving skills and help build on their previous knowledge from their first attempt. This will reinforce the concept that failure isn't bad and that we can learn from our mistakes and make it into something positive.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>If I were to use this in a classroom, I think it would be really beneficial. Based on what we learn in class, this hands on experience is something that is engaging for students. It allows them to ask questions, and to go through trial and error when building different shapes. There's room for improvement, as well as for success. Students learn how different shapes are made, and what they need to be made (points, angles, faces, etc). The actual lesson uses play dough, so it allows the students to have a bit of fun while still learning. Multiple iterations would help in this case. It will allow them to learn more than one shape.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think this influence is something that isn't going any time soon. It's important that we acknowledge the changes that have occurred over time. This is something kids of this generation will get to learn a lot about. They were around for one of the biggest booms technology has ever seen, and to be able to teach them how we got to this point is something worth doing; as well as mentioning how this may all look in the future. We use technology everyday; and I especially think the video makes a great point about being sure we keep up with the risks, and that we teach about those risks. Technology doesn't come without risk, no matter how helpful it may be to our every day lives. Climate change is a big deal, and it needs to be taught in hopes of change. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think this lesson is a great lesson to do with elementary students. The lesson starts out with reading the short story, <em>The Girl Who Never Made Mistakes,</em> which is about Beatrice, who has never made a mistake in her life until the talent show. Throughout the story, she learns that it is okay to make mistakes, and making mistakes is important because they can help us improve if we learn from them. In small groups, the students have to build a broom and dustpan to pick up pieces of scrap paper/other small items. There is a section of the lesson for the students to brainstorm a plan individually, then they share their ideas with their groups and form a team plan. Working with small groups is an excellent way for students to hear other ideas and perspectives and for them to gain teamwork skills, which are essential for life. After they build their brooms and dustpans, they have time to reflect and think about how they could improve for next time. As an exit ticket, they are given a sheet that tells them to write about a time they made a mistake and how they learned from it. Overall, this lesson is a great way to teach students about a growth mindset and that it is okay to make mistakes because they are good learning experiences. I think multiple iterations of this lesson could help because oftentimes, students struggle with having a growth mindset.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>ETS2B - Influence of Science, Engineering and Technology on Society and the Natural World</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think it is essential to, as teachers, highlight the importance of how technology, engineering, and science are fundamental aspects of a society and the way in which it functions. Students need to understand that the world has changed and continues to change and advance. For example, technology now is not always how it used to be. Some students don’t see/know this because they are so used to technology being their “norm.” Students now have access to computers and Chromebooks, whereas, in the past, this was not an option. Even when I was younger, if we needed to use computers, the teacher would have to sign us up to go to the computer lab. Teaching students how technology, engineering, and science have changed and made advancements by using the real world and things they can relate to will most likely make them more interested in learning about that topic.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Marshmallow Tower</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>For this lesson, I had to build a marshmallow and toothpick tower. Prior to building this I had to predict how tall it would be, how many toothpicks I would use, and how many marshmallows I would use. Originally I assumed my tower would be a lot more sturdy than it was, and I predicted it would be 5 inches tall. However, I was able to make it almost 8 inches tall. I think this lesson would be very effective to teach younger students because it allows them to learn problem solving skills if their tower is falling or not as sturdy as they hoped, as well as what materials were stronger than others. I found that the more toothpicks I used the stronger the tower was.&nbsp;<br>I think ETS2B is very important to teach young kids, especially with technology becoming more preeminent in todays society. Incorporating real world problems in the classroom will allow students to compare experiences and allow them to develop useful skills. I think it also gives what they are learning in the classroom a more important meaning and they will be able to connect with the material more. The world is constantly changing and with these young students becoming a part of society it should be emphasized that they are learning about the influence of science, engineering, and technology. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This video was very beneficial. I like how ESTB talks about how fluid engineering and science are. They are constantly changing, improving, and adapting. They also have multiple layers. Science, engineering, and technology shape our world. We influence them, but they also control our world. Our world runs on those three, so it is up to us to keep advancing and improving. This lesson was somewhat difficult to do. I am not sure if I would do it with students under fourth grade. However, it is easy to attempt and shows kids some basics of engineering. It was very similar to the paper tower we made ourselves for this course. It shows and teaches kids how to create, be innovative, adapt, and that things can be built/created in different ways. Multiple iterations would help because you can continue to teach kids how to think outside of the box, and create things in unique ways.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This paper airplane activity is such a fun and engaging way to incorporate STEM into the classroom. It requires so few materials (literally just a few pieces of paper) and can teach students so much, ranging from how far different designed planes will go, to the reasons and aerodynamics behind the flight time and distance of each. I completed this activity as if it were being conducted in a 2nd or 3rd grade classroom. I created two paper airplanes, both with different design plans. I then threw both across a carpet with a length of 124 inches. The first paper airplane with a more basic design flew 120 inches across the carpet. The second paper airplane, with a more complex design, flew only 88 inches. With this data, I would encourage to think about the variables that could have affected these results such as the force that was used to throw the paper airplane, the length of the airplane, and then develop conclusions after testing their planes three times. The conclusion that I came to was the paper airplane with the simpler design plan flew the farthest because there weren't as many folds in the paper allowing air to flow through, and carry the paper airplane a farther distance The class can then share their results as a whole, and we can develop a whole class conclusion based on the design of all of the paper airplanes.&nbsp;<br><br>I think that multiple iterations can be worked into this activity so that students can test multiple design methods and have a chance to revise their work. It is inevitable that the first design they create will have its flaws, it definitely was the case for me. But as they progress through this activity and figure what works and what doesn't in terms of the factors of their design that affect flight time and length, they will be able to eventually create a paper airplane that flies a length that could double or triple the length that was flown the first time.&nbsp;<br><br>ETS2B is such an important concept that should be implemented in every classroom at any grade level, even in college and beyond. There have been so many times when I am learning something and I think how does this actually apply to the real world and when will I ever need to know this information? It is essential for teachers to tie in real-life examples to their lessons and relate what the students are doing to any issues or events that are currently happening throughout the world. Students are not puppets. They crave meaning in their education and always want to know the purpose of what they are learning, even if they don't directly ask that question. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Hey Serena. I remember actually doing a lesson similar to this one in elementary school. I had also mentioned that the video discussed how engineering impacts civilization, but we also impact engineering. Although students may not. I overlooked that technology has made great advancements for students and enriched much of their learning in the classroom, but I agree that it is not always the best for lessons such as yours. In order for students to practice skills and actually take away something from a concept, a hands on involved experience is key.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Hi Serena! Your experiment looks so good! I said very similar ideas about technology and the impact it has on students and their engagement in the classroom. I also agree and said that technology is becoming more prominent in today's world vs when we were elementary students and it is important for kids to get accustomed to using technology. I never did the ballon powered car experiment in school, but did perform similar experiments where I had to use resources from home to build something that we commonly use. I remember doing an experiment where I had to build a phone using cups and string and how excited I was to see if it would actually work. These types of experiments promote great student engagement as well as thinking.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I think ETS2B is an important thing to incorporate into science curriculums, since it takes what students may be learning and shows them how it applies to their lives and the world around them in important and real ways. &nbsp;<br><br>What I built was part of a project where students have some supplies (a cup, ping pong ball, washers, straw, tape) and they have to design a balanced device to carry the ping pong ball across the zipline. The idea is to get them thinking about how to diagnose and solve problems (the carrier being unbalanced) and to work to revise the issues. I used a house key since I don't usually have a bunch of washers sitting around.<br><br>Multiple iterations and attempts at this project would absolutely be beneficial. This activity is much more about the process than the end goal. Students' ideas are not going to work on the first attempt. This will be a place to have them think critically.&nbsp;<em>Why</em>&nbsp;didn't it work? What could be changed? When you made changes, were the results different? How so? And so on. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In this lesson students are provided with criteria, constraints, and a supply list to create a bridge for length/height and weight/capacity. I decided to do this lesson myself and just focus on the length portion of the lesson. After doing the lesson myself I think I would definitely do it with older elementary age kids. It is a really frustrating process, but because of that provides a really good opportunity for students to fail! This also would be a really good lesson to with small groups/pairs to be able to think, plan and create with a classmate.&nbsp;Multiple iterations would be almost necessary for this lesson. Students could do this lesson over and over again and continue to learn about bridges and engineering for days/weeks even. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>It is so important to expose our students to the idea that science is always evolving and changing. In the video he mentions the car example saying that right now our safest car looks nothing like the safest car 40 years ago, and will look nothing like a car 40 years from now. It is what works for us in this moment of time, and that will always change as technology evolves. When students understand this concept, it will be easier for them to understand how things in their everyday lives are always getting upgraded, thought about in a different way, rebuilt etc. This will also provide a sense of motivation for students in their life to want to learn how something works, so that it can be better in their life time. This is how we will create our next generation to do bigger and better things to improve technology- and our world as a whole. </div>]]></description>
