Culture is the customs and beliefs of a group of people. It is essentially their way of life.

This picture is set at a Tet, or in other words, a Vietnamese Lunar New Year Festival. The lanterns in the background are brought out during this traditional festival as it is believed to bring good fortune and health. Also, the girls pictured are wearing an outfit called an Ao Dai, which is a traditional Vietnamese dress. It is mostly worn during the Lunar New Year.

My example relates to culture as my picture is about how in the Vietnamese culture, the Lunar New Year is celebrated. The Vietnamese people celebrate this as it is their belief that this event celebrates the arrival of spring and will bring good fortune. Not only, but it is custom to be wearing Ao Dais, as it symbolizes respect and beauty. The Vietnamese have celebrated this event for many years and have never stopped as it is apart of their culture.

Belief is a person or group's acceptance of an idea to be true. It is them having confidence in the idea and holding it to be true.

In this picture, there are lion dancers who are dancing during the Vietnamese Lunar New Year festival. The colors red and gold are common for the lions as red represents bravery and gold represents a dynamic spirit. There are even kids giving the lions red envelopes, as it is a tradition during this time of year.

My example relates to belief as it is the Vietnamese people's belief that these lion dancers will remove negative energy from the new year. They believe that the lions will bring them good luck and prosperity to themselves and their family. Also, they believe that when red envelopes are given to the lions, it is a sign of welcoming and the lions will bring health and longevity. Their belief of how lions will bring them good fortune for the new year is the reason why lions are continuously brought out every year.

Folkways (Chapter 3)

Folkways are social norms that are practiced in a society. They are done out of custom, and not so much morals.

This picture was set on the night of my birthday. The girl next to me is my best friend. She had just surprised me with some presents and balloons.

My example relates to the definition of a folkway because an example of a folkway is giving someone a present for their birthday. A present on someone's birthday is a regular practice in the United States, as it is a sign of appreciation and celebration. It is a common practice, and there is no moral obligation in giving someone a present for their birthday.

Gender Role (Chapter 12)

Gender role is the expectation that each gender is held to in regards of how they look and behave. Society determines what is appropriate and inappropriate for how men and women present themselves.

This picture shows my first birthday. I am dressed in a pink dress because I am a girl. Also, because I am a girl, my cake is white with flowers, instead of being a boy color like green or blue.

My example relates to gender role because since society tells us that pink is feminine and girl color, my parents dressed me in a pink outfit for my birthday. Society also says that girls should like soft things like flowers and dolls, which is why my cake has flowers on it and I received dolls as presents. The way a girl and a boy act and dress is determined by societal standards, and it is these expectations that people follow. This is the reason as to why my dress was pink and not blue, and my cake had flowers and not sports.

A primary group is the group that one shares the most emotional, intimate, and personal connection with. This group is usually small and consist of your closest family and friends.

In this picture, I am eating with my two best friends. We are childhood best friends as I have known them since elementary school. We have all grown up together and have been apart of each other's lives since we were young.

My example relates to a primary group because my two best friends are my primary group. They are the people who I always confide in when I have a problem and are the people who I share an emotional connection with. They are also the people who I meet face to face with, and talk to the most. Overall, my two best friends are my primary group because they are the people I have a tight-knit and trusting relationship with.
