We can create a safe space for students to learn. Celebrate growth and perseverance. Help classmates realize the incredible amount of thought-process involved in translating material into Spanish and then back into English since English may be the student's second language. 🏆 -M Price

We can create safe environments for our Hispanic students by implementing their culture into our classroom discussions and activities. I also think listening and asking questions will help them feel accepted and heard by me as the teacher. Allowing them to share their experiences with peers.

I loved to involve our Hispanic families with sharing with the class. I would invite them in to share a story or food or anything that they wanted with the class. I have had outfits, musical instruments, and other items shared with the class. Also as we read stories with Spanish, the children would teach one another. As a teacher, it is important to have access to an interpreter if there is limited English so that you make the parent feel included.

We can make sure that they feel accepted by their peers. We can allow our Hispanic students to share their culture with the class. Make sure that important areas in the classroom as well as throughout the building are labeled with words as well as pictures so if the student does not speak any English they can make the connection. It is important that the student feels safe while in the classroom.

Food is a great connector. I have my students bring in snacks that represent their home culture. This allows students of various backgrounds, in this case students of Hispanic heritage, to share their culture and feel more comfortable at school.

We can ensure that our Hispanic students feel seen, heard, and valued in our classroom daily by being more intentional with our planning to include texts, materials, and/or pedagogical practices that are culturally relevant (this includes getting insight from our hispanic students on what they would like to see, which will in turn help them to feel especially valued). Also, if a student's family is limited in their English, it is vital that we do not rely on our Hispanic students to act as translators. We must seek out interpreters and the resources necessary for communicating effectively with our parents.
