My family moved to Rutherfordton from Florida when I was in eighth grade. I remember it being a giant culture shock. I didn't really like Rutherfordton at first due to how small it is and how little there is to do compared to the life I lived in Florida. However, as the years have gone on I've grown a fondness towards this small town. It took a while to get used to a slower pace of life and the change of scenery. Moving to Boone was one of the most exciting moments of my life. Before moving in for my freshman year at App State, I had never been to Boone and didn't know anything about it. I chose to attend App State randomly and I'm so happy I did. I've made an endless amount of memories here and met some of the most incredible people here. Hialeah is a city in Miami-Dad county that's population is primarily Cuban. It is a city full of culture, art, and hard workers. Growing up in Hialeah I was able to experience many different cultures and people. With Spanish being the first language, I was able to learn and understand the language, which has become useful now. The city is full of art and helped me grow a fondness and interest in art and cultures and the ways in which they are intertwined. Not only is the art and culture an incredible part of growing up here, the food was also incredible. There is a great variety of foods to be had from various cultures in Hialeah. On top of all this, all my childhood memories and places I love are in this city. No matter where I travel to or live, this city specifically will always have a special place in my heart.

Louise Erdrich is a Native American novelist and poet. She is apart of the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa in North Dakota.  
I chose Louise Edrich's "Advice to Myself" because it really resonated with me and the way she talks about life and living is really relatable. I tend to overthink and fall into spirals of feeling like I am not doing enough with my life and I'm behind. However, in her poem Erdrich writes about letting life flow and gives advice to herself that can be taken by anyone. One line that really resonated with me was "Pursue the authentic—decide first
what is authentic." In life, it is incredibly important to learn what your values are and who you are as a person. I truly believe you can't live a life of fulfillment until you find happiness with who you are as a person.

Alex Jacobs is a visual artist, spoken word poet, and freelance writer who lives in the St. Regis Mohawk Territory, which is on the border between New York and Canada. In his poem Trudell, Jacobs writes about the things he faces in life that scare him and contrasts those with writing about the things that give him strength. Jacobs states, "Scared of what I felt, scared of my thoughts." As he lists the things that make him scared, all things that pertain to his persona such as knowledge, wisdom, ignorance, and arrogance, he states that he is scared of his life. However, he does have things that bring him strength throughout the life that brings him fear.  He states that he is strong for his family. His son, daughter, mom, and dad. One of the lines that resonated with me the most was "I’m strong for my mom, she seen it all." Personally, my mom is one the strongest people I know and she is a role model for me.
