  • Design of letters inspired by 15th century Venetian typefaces
  • Designed to handle massive bodies of text in a clean and ordered way, and designed to look pleasing without detracting attention away from the text
  • Signature typeface of the Doves Press, est. 1900
  • After the Press' dissolution, the matrices and punches of the Doves Type was famously thrown into the River Thames on Good Friday, 21st March 1913, by one of the press' founders (T. J. Cobden Sanderson). 
  • Many attempts of digitally reviving the font based on books set in Doves Type. 
  • In 2013, a diving expedition in the River Thames was organised by London designer, Robert Green, to revive the punches and matrices of the Doves Type. They were then used as templates to create a digitised version of the font

  • Started as the Doves Bindery in 1893 as a partnership by the bookbinder T. J. Cobden Sanderson, and the printer Emery Walker
  • Doves Press officially established in 1900
  • Operated 16 years, from 1900 to 1913
  • Printed works of English literature. Most well-known for the Doves Press edition of the King James Bible. Also printed the works of:
    • William Shakespeare (sonnets, "Hamlet", "Anthony and Cleopatra", "Venus and Adonis", "Julius Caesar"), 
    • Christopher Marlowe ("Doctor Faustus")
    • John Milton ("Paradise Lost")
    • Percy Shelley
    • John Keats
  • Also printed German literature
  • 1909, dissolution of Sanderson and Walker's partnership, with bitter disputes over the Doves Type's ownership. The partnership dissolution agreement declared Walker to be the rightful owner of the typeface
  • Because of this, T. J. Cobden Sanderson began destroying the Doves Type by throwing the matrices and punches into the River Thames over the course of several years
