By the time Lincoln was finally inaugurated, seven states had already seceded. Lincoln's first priority was to preserve the Union, and he understood the conflict of slavery as the most pressing issue diving it. Globally England and many other modernized European countries had outlawed slavery. This conflict of desiring to become more industrialized scarred the south into starting a Civil War. The struggles in the Civil War greatly affected American political relationships as individuals learned how much better a Union system worked rather than a Confederacy of States. After seeing the bravery of blacks on the battle field, many northerners began to realize why other parts of the globe had abolished slavery. More people began to take a new definition of equality when they saw blacks fighting by their side, although many of them never fully trusted them, they began to see blacks as humans and not property.
