Blood is a fluid connective tissue that has a variety of functions such as protection, transportation and regulation. Furthermore, blood circulates around the body, transporting materials like hormones, oxygen, dissolved substances like nutrients, and heat. The blood is a mixture of cells and cell fragments, including red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets, which are held in a yellowish liquid called plasma that contribute to approximately half of the bloods volume. Within the body, blood is located in the heart and blood vessels such as arteries, capillaries and veins, which take blood to and from every aspect of the body.

Red blood cells transport oxygen and carbon dioxide from the lungs and as these cells have no nucleus, there is more surface area to carry oxygen. Furthermore, red blood cells contain numerous amounts of the protein haemoglobin that are responsible for the transportation of oxygen to the body’s organs and tissues. These cells are also flexible, which permits them to squeeze through all capillaries, especially those that are narrow.
