On Sunday January 30th 1972, in Derry, The British army opened fire on a civil rights protest against the division of Ireland. This was a massacre and 13 people were killed. This day is remembered as "Bloody Sunday" and became a notorious incident.

This song is not really a rebel song as the singer Bono said but it denounces violence and it is a plea against the killing in Ireland at that time.

Dear Mr. President is a song by Pink and the Indigo Girls created in the 2000s. Song in the form of a sung letter "Dear Mr. President" in which Pink speaks directly to the President of the United States (George W. Bush at the time ).

This song is a committed song about criticism of politics. She denounces the policy of the Bush administration and the social problems of her country: poverty, gay marriage, women's rights (abortion), war in Iraq, education of children. Pink proclaims the hypocrisy of politicians and the inability of these privileged men to understand the difficulties of their fellow citizens. (Anna P-J)

Lyrics:
Dear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me
Let's pretend we're just two people
And you're not better than me
I'd like to ask you some questions
If we can speak honestly

What do you feel when you see
All the homeless on the street?
Who do you pray for at night
Before you go to sleep?
What do you feel when you look in the mirror?
Are you proud?

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye?
And tell me why?

Dear Mr. President,
Were you a lonely boy?
Are you a lonely boy?
How can you say, no child is left behind?
We're not dumb and we're not blind
They're all sitting in your Selves
When you pave the road to hell

What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away?
What kind of father might hate his own daugther if she were gay?
I can only imagine what the first lady has to say
You've come a long way, from whiskey and cocaine

How do you sleep while the rest of us cry?
How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Can you even look me in the eye?

Let me tell you about hard work
Minimum wage with a baby on the way
Let me tell you about hard work
Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away
Let me tell you about hard work
Building a bed out of a cardboard box
Let me tell you about hard work
Hard work, hard work, you don't know nothing about hard work
Hard work, hard work

How do you sleep at night?
How do you walk with your head held high?
Dear Mr. President,
You'll never take a walk with me...

Death penalty is still legal in 32 states of United-states and on a federal level, although the trend is towards abolition. Then the most common method used is lethal injection. There currently over 3000 prisoners on death row awaiting executing in US. Since 1976, over one thousand prisoners have been executed, included 61 women and a lot of young people who live in ghetto. Texas, oklahoma are the states with the highest number of executions.

The song written by 2pac called 16 on death row, in 1997, critisizes the capital punishment. But I think the singer wanted to denounce the poor living conditions in American ghettos that oblige young people to fall in delinquency too.

Bye bye, I was never meant to live Can't be positive, when the ghetto's where you live Bye bye, I was never meant to be Livin' like a thief, runnin' through the streets

Bye bye, and I got no place to go... Where they find me? 16 on Death Row Dear mama, these cops don't understand me I turned to a life of crime, cause I came from a broken family

My uncle used to touch me, I never told you that Scared what you might do, I couldn't hold you back I kept it deep inside, I done let it fuel my anger I'm down for all my homies, no mercy for a stranger

The brother in my set, is 16 is wet It's hard to adapt, when you're black and you're trapped in a livin Hell I shouldn't a let him catch me

Instead of livin' sad in jail I could a died free and happy And my cellmate's raped on the norm And passed around the dorm, you can hear his a**hole gettin' torn They made me an animal

Can't sleep, instead of countin' sheep, n****z countin' cannibals And that's how it is in the pen Turn old and cold, and your soul is your best friend My mama prayed for me

Tell the Lord to make way for me, prepare any day for me (why?) 'Cause when they come for me they find a struggler To the death I take the breath from your jugular The trick is to never lose hope I found my buddy hangin' dead from a rope, 16 on Death Row

Bye bye, I was never meant to live Can't be positive, when the ghetto's where you live Bye bye, I was never meant to be Livin' like a thief, runnin' through the streets

Bye bye, and I got no place to go... Where you find me? 16 on Death Row Dear mama, they sentenced me to death Today's my final day, I'm countin' every breath

I'm bitter cause I'm dyin', so much I haven't seen I know you never dreamed, your baby would be dead at 16 I got beef with a sick society that doesn't give a s*** And they too quick to say goodbye to me

They tell me the preacher's there for me He's a crook with a book, that never cared for me He's only here to be sure I don't drop a dime to God bout the crimes he's commitin'

On the poor, and how can these people judge me? They ain't my peers and in all these years, they ain't never love me I never got to be a man, must be part of some big plan To keep a n**** in the state pen

And to my homies out buryin motherf***ers Steer clear of these Aryan 'Cause once they got you locked up They got you trapped, you're better off gettin' shot

I'm convinced self-defense is the way Please, stay strapped, pack a gat every day I wish I woulda known while I was out there Now I'm straight headin for the chair

Bye bye, I was never meant to live Can't be positive, when the ghetto's where we live Bye bye, I was never meant to be Livin' like a thief, runnin' through the streets

Bye bye, and I got no place to go... width="225" height="225">

The title of the song refers to the slogan "This is London calling ..." used by the BBC during the Second World War, often on the airwaves of occupied countries. Strummer (who wrote the text) speaks here of all the unfortunate events in England in the late 1970s, such as the establishment of the government of Margaret Thatcher (the ice age). "London is drowning" refers to the frequent flooding of London by the Thames before the construction of a dike in the 1970s.

The song also has a typical message of the punk movement: address to young people. London Calling encourages young people to wake up from their torpor and participate actively in the life of their country ("Come out of the cupboard, all you boys and girls"). Strummer also denounces the police violence ("We are not got no swing /" Cept for the ring of that truncheon thing). "Truncheon" refers to one of the many names given to police truncheons.

In this song, Strummer expresses his feelings about world events including the Three Mile Island nuclear accident, which occurred the previous year in 1979. He says "We felt that we were struggling about to slip down a slope or something , Grasping with our fingernails.
Fortunate Son

Fortunate Son is a song writen by Creedance Cleawater Revival. The song criticizes war but not only that. In 1968, the grandson of ex-president married the daughter of then president Richard Nixon. During that period the Vietnam war was happening and 80% of people favored it. Seeing a picture of the wedding, John Fogerty, the writer of the song, thought to himself that none of these people were ever going to be close to war in any way.

In the song John Fogerty criticizes the fact that the people who declare war are usually the ones who don’t fight in them. He also criticizes the children born into powerful families for not having to fight in war. A good example to illustrate this is when he sings “I’m no senator’s son”, “I’m no millionaire’s son”.

The song never explicitly talks about the Vietnam war but being that that was the main war happening at the time, it is considered to be about that.

The song is one of the most famous anti-war songs ever written.

Lyrics:

Some folks are born made to wave the flag

Ooh, they're red, white and blue

And when the band plays "Hail to the chief"

Ooh, they point the cannon at you, Lord

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no senator's son, son

It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no

Some folks are born silver spoon in hand

Lord, don't they help themselves, oh

But when the taxman comes to the door

Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no millionaire's son, no

It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, no

Yeah, yeah Some folks inherit star spangled eyes

Ooh, they send you down to war,

Lord And when you ask them, "How much should we give?"

Ooh, they only answer More! more! more! y'all

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no military son, son

It ain't me, it ain't me; I ain't no fortunate one, one

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate one, no no no

It ain't me, it ain't me, I ain't no fortunate son, no no no

Leonard

Only a pawn in their game Bob Dylan

Only a pawn in their game is a song written by Bob Dylan. This song was released in 1963. It refers to the murder of Medgar Evers, a black man and a civil right activist from Missisipi who worked to overturn segregation at the university of Missisipi. The song is similar with another song entitled “Lonesome Death” in the sense that the singer says that the killer is guilty but the blame is also everywhere.
He used the murder to show the roots of evil. In the south the « the divide and rule » has maintained white people and black people divided with black people being oppressed in every way possible. The song does not exonerate violence but it does echo Jesus’s cry from the cross « They know what they do »
The southern elites, adeptes of segregation, understand that they need the poor white inhabitants of the South to join their cause, even though they were as poor as black inhabitants. One of the ways the southern elitists made this happen consisted of designating black people as criminals. The poor white people living there felt humiliated and turned on their black neighbors.

Lyrics:
A bullet from the back of a bush took Medgar Evers' blood.
A finger fired the trigger to his name.
A handle hid out in the dark
A hand set the spark
Two eyes took the aim
Behind a man's brain
But he can't be blamed
He's only a pawn in their game.

A South politician preaches to the poor white man,
"You got more than the blacks, don't complain.
You're better than them, you been born with white skin," they explain.
And the Negro's name
Is used it is plain
For the politician's gain
As he rises to fame
And the poor white remains
On the caboose of the train
But it ain't him to blame
He's only a pawn in their game.

The deputy sheriffs, the soldiers, the governors get paid,
And the marshals and cops get the same,
But the poor white man's used in the hands of them all like a tool.
He's taught in his school
From the start by the rule
That the laws are with him
To protect his white skin
To keep up his hate
So he never thinks straight
'Bout the shape that he's in
But it ain't him to blame
He's only a pawn in their game.

From the poverty shacks, he looks from the cracks to the tracks,
And the hoof beats pound in his brain.
And he's taught how to walk in a pack
Shoot in the back
With his fist in a clinch
To hang and to lynch
To hide 'neath the hood
To kill with no pain
Like a dog on a chain
He ain't got no name
But it ain't him to blame
He's only a pawn in their game.

Today, Medgar Evers was buried from the bullet he caught.
They lowered him down as a king.
But when the shadowy sun set on the one
That fired the gun
He'll see by his grave
On the stone that remains
Carved next to his name
His epitaph plain:
Only a pawn in their game.
Arthur

With God on our side - Bob Dylan

I chose to talk about “With God on our side”, by Bob Dylan.

This song has a very powerful meaning : Bob Dylan denounces the corruption of war, its uselessness… He points the fact that people use God’s name to justify their actions and responsibility, that in that way we can see the world in a manichaean way. He demonstrates that soldiers and leaders who switch on war think they shouldn’t worry about why and who they kill, or the fact that they kill most generally ; because since God’s on their side, then they are killing and propagating misery all over the planet for a good cause. Bob Dylan shows how ridiculous this thought is.

I also think that he criticizes his own nation, and its constitution (mainly based on religion) and its gouvernmental choices (he even added ax extra-stanza later on, speaking of the Vietnam War). Indeed Bob Dylan was one of the activists and artists leading the Hippie Movement, a movement seeking for peace.

Oh my name it is nothin'

My age it means less

The country I come from

Is called the Midwest

I's taught and brought up there

The laws to abide

And the land that I live in

Has God on its side.

Oh the history books tell it

They tell it so well

The cavalries charged

The Indians fell

The cavalries charged

The Indians died

Oh the country was young

With God on its side.

The Spanish-American

War had its day

And the Civil War too

Was soon laid away

And the names of the heroes

I's made to memorize

With guns on their hands

And God on their side.

The First World War, boys

It came and it went

The reason for fighting

I never did get

But I learned to accept it

Accept it with pride

For you don't count the dead

When God's on your side.

When the Second World War

Came to an end

We forgave the Germans

And then we were friends

Though they murdered six million

In the ovens they fried

The Germans now too

Have God on their side.

I've learned to hate Russians

All through my whole life

If another war comes

It's them we must fight

To hate them and fear them

To run and to hide

And accept it all bravely

With God on my side.

But now we got weapons

Of the chemical dust

If fire them we're forced to

Then fire them we must

One push of the button

And a shot the world wide

And you never ask questions

When God's on your side.

In a many dark hour

I've been thinkin' about this

That Jesus Christ

Was betrayed by a kiss

But I can't think for you

You'll have to decide

Whether Judas Iscariot

Had God on his side.

So now as I'm leavin'

I'm weary as Hell

The confusion I'm feelin'

Ain't no tongue can tell

The words fill my head

And fall to the floor

If God's on our side

He'll stop the next war.

Capucine

Born in the U.S.A. - Bruce Springsteen

Born in the U.S.A. is a song written, composed and performed by Bruce Springsteen. This song is fiercely anti-war.

The Viet Nam War is the conflict that opposed, from 1954 to 1975, the North Vietnam supported by China and USSR to the South Vietnam, which was supported by the US Army. North Vietnam emerged victorious from this conflict.

The song talks about the return of a veteran to the United States and his rejection by his compatriots. In this Song Bruce Springsteen pays tribute to his friends who where at the front during the Vietnam War because some of them didn't come back.

"Imagine" has been written in 1971 by John Lennon himself, who was inspired by some peace poems and particulary the line: "Imagine the clouds dripping, dig a hole in your garden to put them in." of his wife Yoko Ono that are in her book: "Grapefruit".The song was produced by John Lennon, Yoko Ono and Phil Spector. We can say that it's a protest song because it denounces war and violences everywhere in the world. This song calls people to peace and stop fighting. "Imagine" talks about an imaginary world with no war and where everyone could be who they want, without judgments. Finally, this song is famous in the world, everybody know it, it's a hymn for peace from John Lennon who is talking to everybody, everywhere.

Lyrics:
Imagine there's no heaven
It's easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today... This song is especially about racial issues. Kendrick lamar says that he wants everybody to disregard the skin color and the ethnicity of people. The movement gained prominence after the many killings of African American men and teenagers by police officers in several US states.

In his song, Kendrick Lamar is intentionally using the language of the oppressors to be more provocative.
We think he is one the best rapper of our times !

Gather around.
