No marketing materials have been distributed for the school safety seminars to be held in March. This is a valuable recruiting tool for our MED program but so far has not been publicized (that we are aware of) other than to our existing EDLS students. At the summer institute meeting on Jan. 22 Rhonda indicated that these had been sent out.
The life calling seminars have been publicized.
Website for summer institutes has been activated. www.ashland.edu/coe/2019-summer-institute. Snail mail brochures and emails have not yet gone out.

Questions /Issues:

On website: Principal workshop courses need to be bracketed together. (They are in the download brochure)

Who is assigning faculty to the summer institute for the reading endorsement? Donna: Chairs in conjunction with program faculty.

Are DSAP faculty supposed to be at the graduate orientations in April? Donna: We will pay mileage and a hotel for any faculty that will attend. Advisors will be leading these - suggest having faculty logged in via Collaborate if not face to face?

Are DSAP faculty supposed to be at the networking receptions in May? If so we would like to know that. There are 12 events that need to be covered plus the school safety seminars (x3) in March. Donna: We will pay mileage and a hotel for any faculty that will attend. These issues will be discussed at the next summer institute meeting which is February 5th at 11 a.m.

Are the networking receptions and graduate orientations required for new students? Donna: recommended not required.

Bachelor's Plus in the DSAP

Cathy provided us with some background information:
Originally many of the Bachelor's plus students came to us with degrees in education from OSU. Now the majority are coming in with non-education degrees and are not doing well on OAE tests. Curriculum was switched to mirror teacher education. Initial licensure undergrad and initial licensure bachelor's plus course syllabi are the exact same knowledge, skills, and dispositions.
In some program areas there isn't enough enrollment, so undergrad, bachelor's plus and MED students are all in the same classes.
OAE scores have improved since Bachelor's plus students have been receiving the initial licensure coursework.
One problem in TL 21 is that the MED cognate is using this initial coursework, which isn't appropriate for an MED.
Today at 1:30 there is a meeting to discuss the proposal to move Bachelor's plus into DSAP.
There is some discussion about embedding initial licensure within an MED program.

Cathy recommends:
1. Each program chooses two courses (6 hrs) that would transfer over to their MED w us.
2. Bachelor's plus needs to stay within initial licensure if they are going to continue to take an initial licensure curriculum.
3. Need to fix the problem of co-enrolling undergrad and MED in the same courses. This could be fixed within the initial licensure program, not by moving to DSAP.
Our bachelor's plus students NEED to take initial licensure coursework and have demonstrated improvement when they do so.

Some universities have licensure embedded with an MED. For us to do so, we would need to do significant curriculum changes that could not be done before fall. The DSAP is not adverse to this, but we want it to be done strategically, thoughtfully, and with high quality. This cannot happen before fall.

We recommend that

The DSAP department be invited and involved in discussion about any movement of programs into the department.

A Bachelor's Plus program director be appointed from the faculty.

A joint DSAP/TED committee be established to begin examining and/or working on the creation of an MED with embedded licensure. This group would bring a recommendation to the COE by fall 2019, and then work on making the curriculum and program changes necessary to create a high quality program for an MED.

We strongly recommend that the COE come together to support and improve the program across BOTH departments, perhaps making Bachelor's Plus a separate organizational entity that belongs to the COE, not a specific department.

Bob moved, Jim seconded. Passed unanimously.

Online Program Management service (OPM) for tech support, content help, marketing. Learninghouse is profit sharing company - 60% of online revenue goes to AU.

Concerns were raised about the lack of participation and involvement by other members of the DSAP.

The group decided to begin drafting a set of expectations that will be used to govern our work and to inform department chairs decisions about the assignment of supplemental contracts,

Show up to meetings
Help do the work of the department
Respond or comply w directives.

1. Attendance at DSAP meetings should be the norm, not the exception for all faculty. DSAP expects you to RSVP and attend department meetings or notify department chairs if you are not going to attend and why you will not be there. DSAP supports absences due to involvement in other academic affairs such as presentations, conferences etc., but NOT for meetings or other activities that could have been scheduled at other times. DSAP also acknowledges that these meetings must be scheduled at the start of the academic year.

2. DSAP faculty share the work of the department. DSAP expects all members to participate equally in the various tasks and activities necessary for the DSAP to function, expand, and maintain a high level of quality. A record will be kept of those who are involved in service through committee work. In addition, we will document who does the regular work of the DSAP with the expectation that all faculty members will have responsibilities in this area.

3. In order for the DSAP to function effectively, faculty need to comply with reasonable directives and requests that allow for the creation of schedules and other critical activities. DSAP expects the faculty to read and respond to emails, and other requests within the requested time frame.

Please take a moment to read and/or revise these statements. We will discuss and finalize at our next meeting on February 22nd at 9 a.m.
