Positive impact of the Generativity Vs. Stagnation stage

Aging naturally encourages us to evaluate and improve. At this stage of aging, one seems less concerned with death and more concerned with positive progress and interaction with their world and the final mark they will leave on it. Generativity in the aging process invokes a concern for the future, a desire to do what is good and right, and to make shifts in one's self that will allow these things to occur.

With this natural phase of aging to evaluate one's life and consider the future, a person could get stuck. Aging can bring about fear and doubt that there is enough time or that the effort is even worth it. If a person has not made a positive and successful transition into this phase of life, they could become stagnant - unproductive, not valued, or uninvolved in the world. This could come from unsuccessful stage transitions prior to this one, life events that have led to feelings of worthlessness, or even social stereotypes that a person might allow to dictate the value of middle adulthood and the positive impacts this age group can have on the world. Aging at this stage of life can greatly impact the next stage if the person does not find their way around stagnation, into generativity.

References

Berk, L.

A person may look back at their life and feel that they made too many mistakes. They feel that it is too late to do anything about it or creative some new positive. It can lead to being in a state of denial about death or death becomes a focus. This can lead to living with an attitude of hostility, despondency and failure. Outwardly this may come out in anger, disdain for others or a complete withdrawal from interaction. The result of this may mean that the person commits suicide or dies as a result of not taking care of themselves.

References

Berk, L. E.

The seventh stage of Gould's theory is a period of transformation. Normally, during this stage people come to the realization of morality as well as a raise in concern for their health. I believe a positive impact of Gould's 7th stage includes wealth of knowledge and experience. A negative impact is the lack of determination one may feel caused by old age and feeling like you don't have much life left. Some of the charcteristics I believe makes it worse include a period of decline where a person slows down both physically and mentally which may lead them to believe making changes is a waste of time. A positive impact is conversing and sharing your knowledge that you have gained over your life time.

References

CHARACTERISTICS OF OLD AGE. (n.d.).

At this point one is either satisfied and content with how life has gone or has at least made peace with how their life has turned out. This is a time of reflection and assessment, it is a time to bring closure to the events of the past and find peace as life is coming closer to it's earthly end. People who feel proud of their accomplishments, who feel satisfied with how things have turned out, feel a sense of integrity. They can look back on their lives with minimal regret, if any, and are more able enjoy the time that they have left.
