In the eyes of Thomas Paine, independence for us is simply common sense. We wish to declare our independence to allow all people the chance of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, something which your pesky rule has gravely deprived us from achieving. In order to establish a government in which all people are granted inherent rights, a new government separate from Great Britain necessary. Such basic human rights have been seriously violated a multitude of times upon the colonists from your cruel rule. In the new country, we plan to implement a government focused on protecting the people rather than abusing power like your government has done. The patriots are prepared to combat your great forces incessantly until we reach our goal of independence for our country.

Due to the many attempts you have made in order to gather more revenue from the colonists, the traditional ways of governing our country have also been transformed without our consent. The Stamp Act, Sugar Act, Currency Act, are only a few examples, and these have clearly been ways for you to gain unnecessary control by finding numerous ways to take money from us through the purchases that we make. As a result, we have faced poverty. Along with this, you have brought your British troops to the colonies. Us colonists live with fear, as your troops are watching our every move daily, and thus we have lost all privacy and freedom. As if this was not enough for you, we were forced to pay for the British armies. Paying for the British armies to stay in our own colonies is unfair and clearly shows our loss of representation, because having your armies stay with us is something we never agreed to in the first place, making your actions toward us without our consent unjust. Local autonomy, natural rights, and popular sovereignty are all characteristics of us colonists that you have destroyed. As Patrick Henry said, “give me liberty or give me death”, because the amount of control you have over us colonists is unreasonable and threatening to our original identities.

With 25,000 American deaths and a great deal of debt, America had to begin their journey of developing a country of our own. Because of the dangerous area America had become during the Revolutionary War, regulars began to stop coming to trade with us, leading to our debt increasing drastically. Basically, all of the fundamental makeup of the colonies was unrooted and reformed after war. Despite the catastrophic effects of the war on American life, many positive things came alongside it. The Declaration of Independence established basic rights and liberties for us colonists, making citizens more content aside from great poverty. Women in particular received more rights than they previously had as influential women like Abigail Adams fought for more equality. With a new government established, George Washington served our country as the first President of the newly founded United States of America.
