These are the doodles I was working on while listening over the past 2 days. I feel that trees are all around us. The students are also all around us, whether on our minds at the end of the day or right in front of us during class time. And just like us and the trees, each student is unique with various needs and talents that differ. We flourish like the tress when our environment is full of the things that will help us to thrive. And as the sun and water nourish the trees, we must remember to be the water and the sun to our students. Each student may need different amounts of water and sun, and some may need shade at times while all the others need to be in direct sunlight, but as long as we nurture the students and remember to meet their differences they will continue to grow and flourish as nicely as any forest of trees.

This is one of my favourite Shelley Moore videos. However, after participating in this professional learning experiencing I am viewing it with a different lens. This video, which I shared with our staff in September, explains that in inclusive education we aim for the outer pins so that we include them all. I'm reflecting now on the terminology and explanation for the analogy. While all the pins are indeed the same visual representation we are referring to them as the outer limits, the edges, and so on. There is something about these "pins" or these students that makes them stand out. I still appreciate the video (and believe Shelley Moore is one of the most amazing leaders, speakers and educators on the topic! Big fan!) and it has helped me greatly in understanding UDL and inclusive educational approaches but a more inclusive visual perhaps is that from Shelley Moore where we saw a circular image with all students represented as dots of the same colour. Perhaps an even better representation would be each dot within the circle having it's own colour. If we assume that the class is made up of varied learners, without an average student, our design for learning can become more inclusive. Maybe rather than aiming for the corners in the bowling lane we aim for the inclusive circle of multicoloured dots.

We have taken in a lot of information over the last couple of days. We see that we need to move forward with open minds to take this information and use it to best benefit all of our learners. Our minds may be a little blown at the moment, but with our community and collaboration, we will move forward and apply our new learning.

Lots to think about after this workshop. I particularly want to work on the assessment piece in Junior High and to include the students in the conversation.
You could focus on any one of the above entries to make the classroom, the school, a more inclusive environment. UDL reminds us that making the classroom more inclusive for one makes it more inclusive for all.

Learners are all diverse and unique. As we learn to welcome and accept all types of learners into our classrooms we realize that our rooms are not vivid because of our decor, but vivid because of our students presenting their own learning variability and classroom personas. No matter the learner I strive to include all in my flexible and lively learning environment.

This workshop has taught me to be mindful of the ways in which I can incorporate UDL and inclusion while developing my teaching pedagogy. It has taught me to always be mindful of individual students' needs and the ways in which I can be prepared and flexible to optimize their learning. Acknowledge and respect the individuals in the classroom and encourage them to contribute to the community as a whole through their ideas and uniqueness.

Participating in the IB workshop on "Principles of Equity and Inclusion" was truly transformative. It reinforced that every child, no matter their background, deserves an inclusive environment where they can feel comfortable and supported. True equity in education isn’t just about giving everyone the same opportunities; it's about actively breaking down barriers and ensuring that each student feels valued.

One of the most powerful takeaways for me was the importance of recognizing and celebrating diversity in the classroom. When students see their cultures, identities, and perspectives reflected in their learning environment, they feel more engaged and motivated. As educators, it's our responsibility to create a space where everyone feels welcome and has the support they need to thrive.

I’m committed to bringing these principles into my teaching by being responsive to each student's needs and ensuring that every voice is heard. Together, by sharing, reflecting, and understanding one another, we can move towards a truly inclusive education for all.
