In this speech he talks a lot about a Kentucky senator who spoke very poorly of black men. He used parts of his speech that said things such as how much we needed slavery, how it benefited us and how awful it would be if slavery ended for economic and moral reasons. John Parker Hale then continued to politely go after these ideals by saying how wrong this man was. He also states how slavery is evil and that the economy would benefit from emancipation, which is very in line with the beliefs of his party, the free soil party. He showed facts about how islands such as Jamaica benefited greatly trying to persuade the country that instead of emancipation hurting, it could actually help us. He then talked about how bad the Dred Scott decision was. Flogging is the punishment where someone is repeatedly hit with sticks or whips. This extremely cruel punishment that he ended within the navy. This shows that he has made positive change, is qualified with experience in politics and also is an example of his stance on slavery. He advocated and got this law passed because he knew that physical punishment that bad is wrong and nobody should face those circumstances. This makes sense knowing that he is pro-emancipation. He has shown by doing this he feels a moral obligation to end such physical and cruel punishment. Flogging is very similar and even less severe than what many saves went through at this time. He wants to end slavery to once again stop this aggressive and immoral behavior and punishment. This shows that he is a good man with strong views and really wants to make a difference in the lives of American citizens. He wants to end slavery and protect people.

The liberty party was a small political group of abolitionists that had the goal of ending slavery. He was a presidential candidate for this party in 1848, but the party dissolved and so he ended his candidature. The liberty party was absorbed by the free soil party which he is the current nominee for. This party still wanted to abolish slavery, and a main reason was for the economic benefit. John Parker Hale has been an abolitionist since the beginning but later jhoined the free soi party. He too saw the economic benefits of ending slavery and so joined the free soil party. It is raining, and there are no fish anywhere near his line. He then turns to his right and says  "I may as well pull up and go home, Marty's got my bait, I stand no chance." He is referring to Martin Van Buren, who was the Free Soil candidate at the time. This whole cartoon demonstrates Hale and his success when it come to presidential elections. If we let slavery move into the west, opportunities and jobs will be taken away from white men. This party wants to end slavery because it is bad, but mainly to help ourselves and our economy. This party understands that slavery is the most important issue so it needs to be focused on. We cannot sit back and avoid this anymore, but need to solve this conflict once and for all to move on. the free soil party is the only one with their head on straight. We care about one issue and very strongly believe in it. Why care about anything else? We are very concentrated!
