The intense American hostility caused the new Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev to plan to deploy nuclear-tipped missiles to cuba. US president John F. Kennedy negotiated with Nikita and was able to prevent the missiles from being deployed in exchange that the US would not invade the island. This would be known as the Cuban missile crisis. </p>]]></description>
