Hello! My job as this play’s costume designer is to create, design and source the costumes for the cast. The costumes will identify each character appropriately and convey the director’s vision for the play, A Doll’s House.

Type of production: Community Theatre

Budget: $2,800 for the entire cast. It was only right to expect such a high amount for the costumes since the director does want well detailed attire for the Victorian era scenery.

When I spoke to the director, he was clear on keeping the classic Victorian era scenery for his play since he wanted to keep the era alive for this play. He wants to reflect Nora and Torvald Helmer as they were first presented in Ibsen’s play, wealthy and overspending. Grand dresses and designs for Nora as well as elegant and expensive suits for Torvald to execute their economic rise. Nora’s long lost friend, Kristine Linde, is a woman suffering from losing her husband and needs help from her friend’s husband to get a job. Out of fashion clothes will be present for wardrobe given the director’s take on these characters.

Their maid will be well dressed as well with new wardrobe for her daily house chores and nanny duties. Krogstad is a man of little to no value now that he is on the verge of losing his job which will definitely display the other side of economic loss.

Finding the appropriate clothing for the adults of the play was quite time consuming since I wanted to use the correct attire for each individual. Given that each one falls under a different social status, I needed to appoint each character with the right look to portray their economic standing. Overall, I enjoyed the pressure and creativity behind this assignments and I know the costumes I chose will play out the Victorian era the director is seeking for the play.
