In what is believed to be the first North American pay-what-you-can grocery store, people can buy everything from organic produce to pre-made meals and pet food and prices are entirely up to the customer. The new store aims to tackle food insecurity and wastage with every provision being donated by a network of partners across the region, making use of food that would have otherwise ended up in landfills. Any profits are poured back into the store, covering costs such as rent and the transport of provisions.

Lake Palcacocha has become a deadly threat to tens of thousands people living beneath it as a result of global warming which is causing rapid melting of the ice caps of two glaciers in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca. A temperature rise of 0.5-0.8C between the 1970s and the 2000s has seen a third of Peru’s ice caps vanish in the last four decades. A breakaway chunk of glacier could displace up to 15bn litres of meltwater from the 70-metre deep, mile long (1.7km) lake, propelling a wave of up to 30 metres over a ridge of rocks and down the mountain. There are around 50,000 people living in the danger zone and according to the authorities’ estimates, even if you were able to warn the people, there could still be about 20,000 fatalities.

This article is about food that is being wasted due it not fitting the criteria set out by supermarkets. A third of the fruit and vegtables that is perfectly edibale is wasted due to its apperance. Consumers and supermarkets should be a lot less picky over what their fruit and vegtables look like and this could help reduce the waste.

Financial consultant. Garrett Fisher flew over mountains in Wyoming and Montana to capture retreating glaciers for his new book, containing 177 images. Glaciers are receding and retreating at fast rates around the world due to rising global temperatures, with the Glacier National Park in Montana set to disappear by 2030. Globally, glaciers have lost around 400bn tonnes in mass a year since 1994. This raises concerns for the millions of people and animals that rely heavily on glacial meltwater.

Scientists from the University of St Andrews have found ways on improving future ice sheet melt predictions. They continued to examine the behaviour of ten large glaciers in East Greenland over a 20-year period using satellite images. There was a clear relationship between the rate of retreat and climatic warming that emerged when observed over longer timescales.

This article talks about Brexit's role in the UK's food imports from overseas. It was announced that the government will be working to secure "adequate food supplies" which would delay food imports across our borders by 30% (from the food we get from the EU alone); slowing the JIT deliveries that we use every day. Only 49% of the food we consume is produced in Britain. The rest comes from overseas in the form of ingredients that we consume later.

Colombia's 6 remaining glaciers are likely to completely melt in 30 years to come. Every year 3-5% of the ice is lost, this is shown via satellite images (the total extent is only 42km). This shows a 36% decrease compared to the extent of ice in the mid-1990s. In this years UK harvests, yields of key crops have fallen due to the hot summer resulting in heavy rain causing farmers to struggle. Food prices are to go up by 5% and wheat yields are predicted to go down by a quarter. Fertiliser prices have also gone up by 23% this year and according to the Bank of England, farmers borrowing money is already up £300m compared to last year and is still expect to rise.

Through a study on more than 1,700 glaciers in northern Ellesmere Island between 1999 and 2015 it shows how warming temperatures have been affecting the ice in the region. A team of Nasa scientists used measurements of “solid Earth deformation” to study the Rink Glacier in Greenland as it melted rapidly in the hot summers of 2010 and 2012. Food wasted every year in Africa could feed up to 300 million people according to the United Nation. Countries like Uganda waste up to 40% of their fruit and vegetables. However, a student engineer has come up with the idea to solve the crisis. He has made a device that is powered on garden waste, and which dehydrates food, so that it could last for months without rotting. This idea is good for Africa as many Africans have little access to electricity. This device is especially meant to help during the dry season, as many crop yields decrease due to lack of water and hot temperatures. The permafrost is evaporating in this region. It has made rocks unstable and prone to collapse. This has led many walking trails to become dangerous. The glaciers has shrunk by almost a half since the 1900s and during the 80's to the 2010's there has been rapid retreating of the glacier. The most visible evidence of this is the Mer de Glacier which is unrecognisable to its Edwardian self. It shrinks around 40 metres a year and has lost a depth of 80 metres in the last 20 years. Many say this is due to climate change. A caterpillar called the armyworms have ruined food stocks across Africa and has now spread to the south of India. It has become a big threat to food security in which it has been found. Two years ago Africa lost billions of pounds worth of crops, mainly that of maize - due to the insect. Now in India around 70% of crops examined have the caterpillar amongst them and with India being a large producer of maize - producing around 20m tonnes. There have been links to glaciers melting and natural disasters. Evidence of this is in 2015 when the Alaska Tyndall Glacier's slope collapsed causing 180 million tonnes of rock into the neighbouring fjord.
