The new store aims to tackle food insecurity and wastage with every provision being donated by a network of partners across the region, making use of food that would have otherwise ended up in landfills. Any profits are poured back into the store, covering costs such as rent and the transport of provisions.

A temperature rise of 0.5-0.8C between the 1970s and the 2000s has seen a third of Peru’s ice caps vanish in the last four decades. A breakaway chunk of glacier could displace up to 15bn litres of meltwater from the 70-metre deep, mile long (1.7km) lake, propelling a wave of up to 30 metres over a ridge of rocks and down the mountain. There are around 50,000 people living in the danger zone and according to the authorities’ estimates, even if you were able to warn the people, there could still be about 20,000 fatalities.

Garrett Fisher flew over mountains in Wyoming and Montana to capture retreating glaciers for his new book, containing 177 images. Glaciers are receding and retreating at fast rates around the world due to rising global temperatures, with the Glacier National Park in Montana set to disappear by 2030. Globally, glaciers have lost around 400bn tonnes in mass a year since 1994. This raises concerns for the millions of people and animals that rely heavily on glacial meltwater.

The National Farmer's Union reported that farmgate prices are likely to increase as a result. They continued to examine the behaviour of ten large glaciers in East Greenland over a 20-year period using satellite images. There was a clear relationship between the rate of retreat and climatic warming that emerged when observed over longer timescales.

https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/2018/aug/20/food-waste-alarming-rise-will-see-66-tonnes-thrown-away-every-second
The amount of food that is wasted each year will rise by a third by 2030 and 2.1bn tonnes will either be lost or thrown away. This is equivalent to 66 tonnes per second. Each year, 1.6bn tonnes of food worth around $1.2tn goes to waste which is about one third of the food produced globally. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimates that about 815 million people in the world were suffering from chronic hunger in 2016 and it will only continue to grow at a faster pace from now.

It was announced that the government will be working to secure "adequate food supplies" which would delay food imports across our borders by 30% (from the food we get from the EU alone); slowing the JIT deliveries that we use every day. Only 49% of the food we consume is produced in Britain. The rest comes from overseas in the form of ingredients that we consume later.
http://glacierhub.org/2018/08/29/colombia-may-lose-all-of-its-glaciers-in-the-next-thirty-years/
Colombia's 6 remaining glaciers are likely to completely melt in 30 years to come. Every year 3-5% of the ice is lost, this is shown via satellite images (the total extent is only 42km). This shows a 36% decrease compared to the extent of ice in the mid-1990s. Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru are home to 99% of the world’s tropical glaciers; meaning that a 2 degree worldwide increase will lead to drastic water rise in these countries.

The IGS claims that it can produce 200% more yield than the traditional greenhouse and reduce food waste by 90% all the while of being much more environment friendly, it is far more water efficient, has almost no reliance on pesticides to keep the crops healthy and reduces the overall food miles.

https://www.nationalgeographic.com/environment/2018/08/east-antarctic-ice-sheet-melting/
This article is about the inevitable discovery of the East Antarctica's glacier to be shrinking and melting. In the past they were focusing more on the West Antarctica and faced issues in analysing the East such as ineffective technology at the time or had to wait for many years to find concrete evidence that the glacier was showing clear signals that it was shrinking. When they analysed closely in recent years, they found out that the glacier has indeed shrunken but it did not appear to thinner.

According to the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation, food waste makes up 8% of greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, while 870 million people around the world go malnourished making a solution to food waste an important step in fighting climate change and world hunger. 13 initiatives geared toward achieving the UN’s target of cutting food waste by 2030 in half were outlined including: education, better training, policy changes, and local sourcing of food.

https://phys.org/news/2018-08-mountain-glacier-impact-pacific-northwest.html
The article is about how accelerated melting of mountain glaciers in the Cascade Range could impact water supplies in the Pacific Northwest region over the coming decades. In a new study, scientists used computer modelling to estimate the flow of mountain glacial melt to predict future changes to glacier mass and meltwater volume through 2099. It showed that glaciers will have less water available during the dry season over the coming decades and predict declines in snow and glacier melt could lead to an 80 percent reduction in late summer river volumes by the end of the century.

Countries like Uganda waste up to 40% of their fruit and vegetables. However, a student engineer has come up with the idea to solve the crisis. He has made a device that is powered on garden waste, and which dehydrates food, so that it could last for months without rotting. This idea is good for Africa as many Africans have little access to electricity. This device is especially meant to help during the dry season, as many crop yields decrease due to lack of water and hot temperatures. Plus it is relatively cheap and small , with beginning the size of a small fridge and costing around £60.

It has made rocks unstable and prone to collapse. This has led many walking trails to become dangerous. The glaciers has shrunk by almost a half since the 1900s and during the 80's to the 2010's there has been rapid retreating of the glacier. The most visible evidence of this is the Mer de Glacier which is unrecognisable to its Edwardian self. It shrinks around 40 metres a year and has lost a depth of 80 metres in the last 20 years. Many say this is due to climate change. Due to the melting of the permafrost , it has impacted many mountaineers and has caused rockfalls.
