Rural schools with 8th-grade science classes are invited to join a WestEd study investigating the impact of the STEMACES program on students' science achievement. The study also looks to develop effective tools and support for teachers who are delivering STEM+C curricula. Thanks to evidence of improved science learning in its Learning by Making course (see WestEd study), Sonoma State, in partnership with Angelo State University, has been awarded an Education Innovation and Research grant to refine STEMACES for broader regional impact and cost effectiveness.

The 21CSLA Universal Transitional Kindergarten Initiative releases learning modules through a “Trainer-of-Trainers” model with a diverse cadre of certified UTK Regional Trainers. To date, over 55 active trainers are certified to meet the needs of local districts by leading powerful, equity-focused professional learning.

The OPTEL Instructional Leadership Institute will equip participants with the expertise needed to understand and use California’s Observation Protocol for Teachers of English Learners (OPTEL). The four-session series combines in-person and virtual formats and will cover the following OPTEL topics:

• structure and equity focus

• performance ratings

• observation documentation

• high-leverage instructional strategies

• parent consultation approaches

Institute participants will acquire essential knowledge to formatively assess student language acquisition progress in expressive and receptive skills. This practice of using the OPTEL will inform participants of next steps for ELD classroom instruction and align their system to an equitable approach towards English Learner reclassification.
