In Okonkwo's society a man's chi is his personal god/destiny. It is understood in his clan that a man's chi has a predetermined destiny and that a man can not rise above his chi's destiny. But in chapter 4, we are introduced to the proverb "if a man says yes his chi says yes also." This opposes the viewpoint of the clan as it states that a man can control his destiny. Okonkwo switches between thess two viewpoints as it suits him, when things are going well he sees himself as the maker of his own destiny, but when things are bad he doesn't take responsibility and asks himself why would this happen to him. When Okonkwo kills himself, he can be more or less at blame for his death, depending on your interpretation of chi.

In this quote we see the people of the clan would say that Okonkwo was predestined to be great and his chi was good, but since things are going well for Okonkwo he's uses the proverb to say that Okonkwo controlled his own destiny and made himself great.

"A man could not rise beyond the destiny of his chi. The saying of the elders was not true- that if a man said yea his chi also affirmed. Here was a man whose chi said nay despite his own affirmation." (131)

When Okonkwo is kicked out of his clan for 7 years and things are not going well for him, he switches his perception of chi from a destiny that can be controlled to a controlled destiny and he blames his chi for what happens.

Some modern day religions believe in predestination, meaning that they are already determined as good or bad people, and will either go to heaven or hell. Predestination relates to Okonkwo's clan's interpretation of chi where a man can't rise above his chi. Then there are some religions and non-religious people who believe that they control their destiny and all their actions have consequences that can change their destiny.
