It is known that I am not the best person in the world on using my carbon. I think that some of the reason that the family vegetarians that have 3 people living in an 2 bedroom apartment's carbon footprint is less than mine is because I use more energy and we like to travel a lot. We have 4 people living in a 4 bedroom house, so that beats 3 people in a 2 bedroom apartment. I think that my carbon footprint is less than the family of 5 because they might live in a city or have everything close by to them. We live in a place that everything is spread out and so we can't walk everywhere and public transportation is scarce. We recycle a lot and want a composer, but unfortunately our home owners association does not allow it. We eat meat on most nights and I think that that might be some of it because the families are both vegetarian and have a little fish. We don't have any solar panels although we are trying to get them. I do not spend a lot on beauty products and think that there is no need for them.

Reflection: While it's quite obvious these people are living a healthier lifestyle I myself am living as healthy as a life that I wish. I feel that meat is an amazing food and I don't want to give it up. My family is huge and we've always had our difficulties with adjusting to carbon usage but we are trying our best. Unlike these two people I'm always on the road because of sports and our busy lifestyle so eating out is a must if we want food in a 6 hour time-span though it might not be the most carbon-saving thing. My mom and grandmother get cold easily so the house is always warm but we try to save carbon with a couple solar panels on our roof. I don't buy health or beauty products because I'm not that type of girl but clothes are a must for me. I've never been out of the country by plane or car and I've never flown. However, I have taken several long road trips to Florida, Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Kansas, and South Dakota making gas usage run high. Side note, I'm going to Florida again this spring. Unlike both of these people, recycling and composting has never been a huge thing for me, we recycle plastic and paper but not much else. My family consists of six people and three more may be joining us in a month or two in a 5-bedroom house. While this might not compare to five people living in a one-bedroom house I think having this many people in one house saves carbon. As you can tell, I don't really think about saving carbon but when I do we take big steps to help.

Things to improve.

While my family is good with having solar panels and never flying there are some things to improve as always. One thing that would help with saving carbon is if our family limits our road trips around the country. We use a lot of gas with these road trips doubling our carbon usage. We could also bike more and walk more. When the place I am heading is too far away for walking I've decided to drive a car but instead of a large minivan I will drive a small 2-person little buggy. Another thing that would be good to help is to obviously recycle more. I have never been into recycling, while our recycling bin does fill up pretty quickly, it only does that because we recycle normal things like cardboard boxes and milk cartons. We could start to compost and recycle things along the lines of food, glass, and more paper than we do. This could help our disposal of items so that instead of just dumping them in a trash yard we put them to good use and so that we can reuse them in the future. Another problem that would be good to fix would be our problem of eating out all the time. Lots of times my family will come home from school and/or sports which makes us pretty tired. Instead of cooking, my family will go get fast food and more often than not, it's not very healthy. My point is that we could push ourselves to cook instead of just being lazy and driving more to go get food. One last thing that wouldn't bother our daily lives is making our house cooler. We don't need our house to be hot the entire time so cooling our house down wouldn't make a difference. In addition, having a solar water heating adds to the help our solar panels do. This will help the amount of carbon I use while taking showers and washing my hands.

I think that having a garden is good, but there could be other things we could do. For starters, we could always not use planes as much. We are trying to start not leaving things on standby. As I said earlier we are trying to get solar panels. I think that we could also recycle more and eat what we buy. I also think that we could not eat out as much and eat more healthy food. We are starting to go to Aldis's which is better food, and they get things more locally. I think that we could also get a small composted and start recycling more food, even though it is not a lot of food, it is still some food that we can compost for most of our usage. We also could get our Airogardens out, they are year round gardens, we also have a garden in the summer, so that helps and we can put the composer in that. I could have meat in less meals and have more fruits and Veggies from our garden. We could get solar panels and a solar water heater. I guess I could go with not getting a new outfit all the time.

By biking and walking I was able to slim down my carbon footprint by a lot. This, in my opinion, is the most important step to fixing your carbon footprint. I had taken the quiz a couple times before deciding to walk and what a difference it made. Before, my footprint was 104% and look at the difference now. Walking is an important step in the carbon cycle and I am determined to keep walking.https://settlement.org/ontario/housing/living-in-ontario/green-living/what-are-the-environmental-benefits-of-walking-and-cycling/
