Freedom of information law empowers citizens to gain access to government records, thus engendering transparency and accountability. Scrutiny by the public with the aid of FOI laws gives us the power to examine and understand official decisions and also to hold institutions accountable in society. It's about ensuring a more informed and engaged society. #FOI #RightToKnow #Transparency

The presentation is very good. A few remarks...when you were referring to the national security institute, you neglected to say that you gave it just as an example and the law refers to governing and public institutions starting from Municipalities, through the IDF (partial access to information) and till the National Security Institute.

Referring to the origins of the Freedom of Information Laws is wonderful.

Indeed more and more countries offer Freedom of Information Opportunities.

The problem is that these laws have no teeth. In other words sanctions are scarce. This is why although the worldwide awareness to FOI principle grows, we are witnessing a backsliding as authoritarian regimes do not want to expose the information although it is being considered as public information.

Another interesting point you could have mentioned is the press role in uncovering corruption and mischiefs as well as reporting about governmental functions. These depend, inter alia, on FOI requests and public data. when public information is unavailable the press will face challenges in its attempt to expose wrong doings
