Chapter 1 Signpost: CC

Evidence: "Mom wasn't looking at me. She was staring daggers at Dr. Hugely. She crumpled up the tissue she was holding and stood up. "Let me tell you something doctor. There is no way in heaven or 🤬 that we will be sending Melody to a nursing home!" (Chapter 4 page 25). Claim and reasoning: this is a cc because Melody's mom is usually really nice and has kindness for others. answer to anchor question: I think that she is acting this way because she doesn't want to face the fact that Melody has a really bad disability, enough to put her in a nursing home. Mom thinks Dr. Hugely is wrong about Melody's learning mindset and she truly believes Melody is capable of learning. literary element: this helps me understand that one theme of the book can be "never give up and fight for what you love and believe in" I wonder if mom will ever get over the fact that Melody has a really bad disability and might need more special help then she thinks.

Evidence: "Its like I live in a cage with no door and no key. And I have no way to tell someone how to get out. Oh, wait! I forgot about Mrs. V!" (Chapter 5 Page 38) Claim and reasoning: I think this is a AM because she realizes that she has someone to help her out. answer to anchor question: It might give Melody a spark of hope that people will eventually find out that she is really smart on the inside and Mrs. V will help bring that out. literary element: this helps me understand that Mrs. V can be the key to Melody's cage and help get her out. I wonder if Melody will eventually get out of her cage and show people how truly smart she is.

Evidence: "Why didn’t they call me? Why didn’t they tell me about breakfast? Why can’t I be like everybody else?" (Chapter 29 page 262) Claim and reasoning: I think this is a TQ because she is really trying to figure out why they left her and went to Washington D.C. themselves. answer to anchor question: It makes me wonder about Melody's loyalty to the team and how much it really meant to her. Her questions made me feel like she really cared. literary element: this helps me understand that one theme of the book can be don't judge a book by its cover so I wonder how Melody will react when she sees her team again.

Evidence: "Don't get bogged down in all those touchy feely words and phrases you read in books on disabled kids. Melody is a child who can learn and will learn if she sticks with me." (Chapter 6 page 41) Claim and reasoning: I think this is a words of the wiser because Mrs. V is telling Dad that she can help Melody because she is an expert and working with disabled kids. answer to anchor question: I think that mom and dad need to let go and trust that Mrs. V can help Melody so she can make progress. literary element: The internal conflict is mom and dad letting go of Melody to Mrs. V. They were hesitant about leaving Melody and wanted to be sure that Melody was taken care of throughout the day.

Evidence: "How could they do this to me? And helpless. I hate feeling like this like when I was little and got stuck on my back like a stupid turtle. There was nothing I could do. Nothing." (Chapter 28 page 260) Claim and reasoning: I think this is an AA because Melody keeps thinking about why they left her and went to Washington D.C. themselves. answer to anchor question: I think the author brings this up because he wants us to understand how hard it is to live with a disability like Melodys. literary element: This helps me understand that some things you just can't change so you have to accept, adapt or change yourself.

Evidence: "Once when I was about 4...Then, in the toy section, I saw them. Brightly colored packages of plastic blocks. Just that morning I had seen a warning on television about that toy - they were being recalled because the blocks had been painted with lead paint... I didn't want the blocks, I wanted to tell her they were dangerous." (Chapter 3 page 15-16) Claim and reasoning: I think this is a memory moment because she is remembering how she could not tell her mom about something dangerous so she has these tornado explosions which happens when she is frustrated. answer to anchor question: I think this memory is important because it flashes back to when she has her first public tornado explosion. Literary element: this helps me understand how frustrated she is that she cannot communicate so she does the only thing that she can do...kick and scream.
