Mona had also not listened to Officers Brown and Osuna telling her not to get involved with Frank Ruiz but she had gone and had a child with him. In chapter two Mona had said"My father was the center of my world, and if he said the boys were bad people, then they were bad people." showing her Father giving her advice on how the gang members weren't good people but her future only including them ignoring her father's advice. She had gone through the misogyny of her time and the backlash of being in an ex-gang. In chapter fourteen Mona says " I look back on where I've visited during my climb to a new life." when she was talking about her trooper tattoo she explains how she sees the tattoo as a resemblance to how hard she has worked to become a police officer.
