My “Takeaways”

- increase wait time (guilty!) . . . Students need processing time/think time, to be able to engage in authentic, meaningful conversations
- stop watering down vocabulary . . . Use those big words and expand on the meaning of those big, juicy words (that could even be used later in student writing!). At one point, when I was a classroom teacher, I had a “juicy word wall,” where students posted any “juicy” words they came across.
- let them talk! . . . Conversations are vital to overall understanding. Less teacher talk, more kid talk. Use sentence stems at the beginning, to get students comfortable. Then sit back and watch the magic of authentic, meaningful conversations develop naturally among students! Hearing and sharing stories, thoughts, ideas will lead to those powerful conversations.
- vocabulary exploration . . . Overall, with students I work with, I have always noticed the lack of vocabulary knowledge, even simply naming opposites or alike items (Ex: what word means the opposite of sad, what word means the same as happy, etc.). We need to really focus on and explicitly teach vocabulary, whether it be content-related, big, juicy words, or unfamiliar words - immerse our kiddos in words and build that word knowledge! The transfer to writing would be really neat to see!

Overall, interacting with language will build students’ language capacity, which will, in turn increase comprehension, conversational skills, writing skills, etc.

SOOO exciting!!! 😊
