Education Mental Health Practitioners (EMHPs) provide short-term CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) informed low intensity interventions for young people who are in school. An EMHP is trained to support young people through assessment, formulation, psychoeducation and (brief) treatment, using a range of evidence-based, ‘CBT informed’ approaches.

EMHPs support children who are experiencing mild to moderate mental health needs, such as mild anxiety/ worry, panic, low mood, low self-esteem, and common behavioural difficulties. Low intensity CBT and is an early intervention strategy method which can equip children with the tools they need to manage their mental health difficulties as they arise, hopefully preventing mental health difficulties later in life. We also work with parents to help them understand their child’s behaviour or anxiety.

My name is Holly - I am the EMHP in your school. You might see me around. Young people might meet me for assessment, 1:1 sessions, groups and workshops. I might also deliver assemblies and workshops.

I think I am easy to speak to and I use games and activities to get to know you. The first time you might meet me for an assessment, your parents or carers will probably be with you. I will want to get to know you and ask you how and when you would like your sessions to be delivered.

Here’s a little about me:

I’m someone who loves meeting new people. I enjoy making people laugh and believe a bit of humor can brighten any day. Being outside is one of my favorite things, whether it’s exploring nature or just enjoying fresh air and sunshine.

I also love to cook! Experimenting with new recipes in the kitchen is always fun for me, and sharing good food with others makes it even better. Music is another big passion of mine—I enjoy going to concerts and live shows.

Helping your child in the lead-up to exams

It’s important for your child to have downtime from studying, which could be something as easy as watching a film or meeting up with friends etc. This can be rejuvenating and revitalising for them.

Help them eat well and get exercise. This doesn’t mean sticking to the perfect diet or going for a daily run, just getting fresh air and getting moving will make all the difference.

Listen to them. Your child will be experiencing all kinds of emotion. Be the kind of person who can sit and listen without judgement whenever they need to talk.

Exam time is stressful, so reassure them - let your child know that no matter what happens they will be OK. Remind them that they have a support system who will always be there to help and advise them.

Manage your own expectations. It’s natural to have expectations and hopes for how your child will do in exams. What’s important is not to project your fears, worries, and ambitions onto them.
