Propaganda is most dangerous in two situations - when there is imminent danger affecting a large group of people, or when there is a great deal of blameless suffering or injustice. People will naturally seek a safe haven when faced with a dangerous situation, and propaganda, although false, can tap into the peoples' fear and can provide for a convincing argument for support.

People will also believe in propaganda easily when there is blameless suffering in their society. In the case of the Jewish people, it was easy for post-WWI Germany to be convinced that their poor state of affairs was due to these people, especially with the use of propaganda.

Propaganda exploits what people believe by finding loopholes in truths and reinforcing previously known facts with lies, corrupting your knowledge. In order to tell the difference between a truth and half-truth, people have to really think about what the propaganda trying to convince you to do. "Alternative facts" and "fake news" these days are actually just discrepancies between different news and media sources. You must extrapolate from the information provided to form your own opinion. The vulnerability to propaganda comes from those who do not want to make their own opinion, and fully side with a single source of information.

To guard against propaganda, you have to be aware of the tactics that many propaganda makers out there commonly employ. You should be aware of the various strategies, and how they can be employed and to what effect they can be employed to. Propaganda has key features that distinguishes it from other types of advertising such as fear-invoking messages, but it also has characteristics similar to typical ads like using ethos, logos, and pathos to influence the consumer. You must ask yourself the informational questions: who, what, when, where, why, and how to further understand what the goal of the advertisement is. As Charles Kettering said, "Knowing is not understanding. There is a great difference between knowing and understanding: you can know a lot about something and not really understand it." . You can apply this quote to properly comprehend propaganda.
You should also do a lot of prior research- you shouldn't just blindly believe whatever information you obtained from the propaganda that was distributed. Know the tactics, and know your facts, and you should be able to stay safe from being tricked by propaganda.

TL;DR RESEARCH BEFOREHAND AND KNOW TACTICS FOR PROPAGANDA

Propaganda is most dangerous when an area is unstable and in need of strong guidance because propaganda helps portray people as leaders or as problems. This causes extreme stratification as shown in Nazi Germany and Mussolini's Italy. That stratification can cause the collapse of the area's political, social and economic structures.
Propaganda is also dangerous when no prior research is done to analyze the sources and the opposing viewpoints. Propaganda takes advantage of the unwitting ignorance and shapes opinions without any serious factual evidence. As Hannah Arendt once said, "Only the mob and the elite can be attracted by the momentum of totalitarianism itself. The masses have to be won by propaganda." This quote shows that propaganda is dangerous in areas of social instability, as previously mentioned.
Propaganda is a tool for those who wish to control the opinions, and therefore the minds, of the people.

If people cannot find the difference between the two, they can be easily brainwashed by such advertisements. The best way we can alleviate this is by creating awareness and an informed society that can detect, recognize, and destroy bad propaganda.

To guard against propaganda, you should always be critical of everything you read. Question things that you read and try to see if whoever has written it has some sort of ulterior motive. Figure out what they are trying to make you think or feel, and see if you really agree with what they are trying to get you to think. Look at examples from opposing viewpoints in order to get both sides of an argument. Propaganda can be very persuasive, but if you keep your guard up you can stay informed and not be influenced by malicious sources.

Philip Pan
Often times, propaganda can be misdirected and biased towards one particular viewpoint or perspective. In a society where media outlets and news sources are nonexistent, such propaganda would impose as a serious issue. However, in a society as diverse as that of the United States, many options are present. One part of our responsibility as educated citizens is to remain informed regarding all current day events. By maintaining this degree of information, we can successfully safeguard against propaganda, as we will be able to successfully discern the truth, from the "alternative facts". Thus, as proven above, education is ultimately a key strategy in protecting ourselves from the sometimes detrimental effects of propaganda.

One viable way of defense is to check sources. By checking if the source is a trusted one, you have a better chance of gaining real knowledge. Also, by checking other sources and cross-checking. You are ensuring that you are getting the most recent information and, the information that will benefit you the most. Without these tactics, you are vulnerable to propaganda and misinformation.

When children see new information, they instantly believe it as they have no prior knowledge to compare it with. This means that children raised during a strong regime that promotes it's own information, will believe the information given to them, and eventually so will the county. Propaganda will have the most effect on a young audience, so making it the most dangerous. This makes them easy to persuade and influence with little to no evidence and just persuasive images or phrases, since they have no basis for their opinion to stand on. Ignorant people cannot spot propaganda and whether they are being misinformed. Another vulnerable target for propaganda are people who are not emotionally stable, because an effective propaganda strategy is to appeal to a person's feelings, mainly fear or safety.

When people are lead to believe that they are isolated from others, this leads to the inherent belief that there way of life is the one singular and correct way. A leader figure who wants to push their agenda is then able to easily sway the general population's opinion by either using a scapegoat or create separation and divide between the two communities. This can then create more civil unrest and chaos in an area that was already exposed to an economic, social or military downfall

Nobody , other than the person making the propaganda, can really know the truth about what is really going on is we just accept everything we hear because a lot of people are saying it. The main thing that makes people so vulnerable to propaganda is the fact that people are very social animals, and tend to believe things we are told whether its true or not. One of the leading factors to this increased vulnerability is simply increased exposure propaganda, primarily through social media usage. With the introduction of social media, as well as the internet, those with insufficient knowledge of a subject may easily add to the flow of information, disguising it as reliable and truthful.
