This reminds me of George Bush's "No Child Left Behind policy", which redirected funds to schools based on their aptitude in order to improve America's education. This had negative consequences and only further harmed struggling schools. I do not see these sort of policies as helpful. I would argue the police departments actually need more funding or at least serious revisions. The police are not supposed to be our enemy and we need to seriously revise that. Stronger application procedures, psychological tests, improved training. I think that defunding the police does little to change who is actually holding the guns, which is most important. Redistribution of police is one action that could be taken to lessen tensions in areas heavily concentrated with police officers. White people don't have the same perspective as African Americans do with the police as white people aren't targeted because of their race. Lots of people say they stop crime, but they don't, they are only there after crimes occur, police don’t even work to stop crime, and there are ways to do that if you focus on why crimes occur in the first place (more funding for mental health, poverty, biases against different groups of people)
