This event/ quote shows the isolated and suspicious place the characters will have to adapt in but also, and most importantly, introduces the setting of Jamestown.  This sequence of Captain Smith training Samuel not only shows the relationship growing between them but the survival skills Samuel is developing. When living in Jamestown a lot of patience and hard work is needed to just get through the night. More specifically, colonists must chop down trees for firewood, gather fish and then cook the fish on the fire, which clearly presents a sense of survival. This quote shows that after landing on Jamestown, Samuel especially, has to adjust from coming from an established place like England, to going to a foreign and primitive location. But due to how it not only shows Samuel's grit to survive, even if it's just cleaning pots.
