Important Event #1-Settling in Jamestown

Quote- "At last we are allowed up on deck for our first sight of Virginia. It is green, quiet, and desolate. There are no natives coming to us in canoes as they did in the Caribbean islands. There are no houses, no huts, just wise old trees in spring leaf, standing guard over the sandy shore."(Page 59, Carbone.)

This event/ quote shows the isolated and suspicious place the characters will have to adapt in but also, and most importantly, introduces the setting of Jamestown. If not for the event of settling in Jamestown, we wouldn't of seen the transformation of several different characters or even had a story in general.

Important Event #3- Sword Training

Quote- "We will train every day," he tells me . "Wear your armor whenever you leave the fort. The sword will be no match for flying arrows, but tomorrow I will begin to teach you to use another weapon--one that is much more powerful than the sword."(Page 88, Carbone.)

This sequence of Captain Smith training Samuel not only shows the relationship growing between them but the survival skills Samuel is developing. This specifically is important because considering that Natives are plotting to assault Jamestown, not having Samuel learn these skills would result in him dying from an Indian attack, thus not seeing his character and plot evolve.

Quote 1- "All around I hear footsteps, shouting, that god-awful shrieking, the twang of arrows being shot, men crying out in pain. Finally I hear musket fire. Kill them, I think. But the twanging of arrows continues. I feel the impact as an arrow hits our mattress."(Page 79, Carbone.)

Quote 2-"It is James, his thin body lying limp. "No," says Captain Gosnold gravely. "This one is dead."(Page 80, Carbone.)

As a result of the setting being as dangerous as it is, it presents stakes for the characters since they are vulnerable to Indian attacks, sickness, etc. But in this case, the colonists actually have a casualty among their own members, which is James, who was killed by none other than a Native attack.

Quote-"That afternoon the sound of chopping wood rings out over the rumbling of the waves. The gallows is cut up and thrown on the fire, where it nicely roasts our fish for supper."(Page 49-50, Carbone.)

When living in Jamestown a lot of patience and hard work is needed to just get through the night. More specifically, colonists must chop down trees for firewood, gather fish and then cook the fish on the fire, which clearly presents a sense of survival. And all of these precautions are because of the setting's primal habits.

Theme- People have to work hard for what they want, even if it means relocating as well.

Quote-"They haven't had a really good cleaning in three months, so the sand has some hard work to do. I join them, toiling in the hot sun until sweat drips from my face. I wish I could be playing back in the salty sea or swinging a hatchet in the shade of the forest."(Page 42, Carbone.)

This quote shows that after landing on Jamestown, Samuel especially, has to adjust from coming from an established place like England, to going to a foreign and primitive location. But due to how it not only shows Samuel's grit to survive, even if it's just cleaning pots. But also the theme of relocating and working hard as well.
