The chapter starts with the death of Maman and how Meursault (the main character and narrator) is reacting to the event. Further, there is the wake happens with Meursault and some of his mother's friends. The next day the funeral happens and with that the chapter ends.

In this chapter we are able to see how complicated love/hate relationships can be. That is all demonstrated with Salamano and his dog. We are also able to see how revenge is something present in the world in two different ways, the plan that Raymond has, and with the mistress' brother trying to kill Raymond.

At that same time, he gets a promotion from his boss, but he doesn't show any emotion, which makes his boss angry. Later Marie proposes to Meursault, but he doesn't seem to have an appropriate reaction to the proposal and says "yes" if it would make Marie happy. Further, he has dinner at Céleste's and meets with a strange looking woman. To end the chapter he has a talk with Salamano about his dog missing and what he was feeling.

This is the final chapter that the book has. It is about Meursault's final hours. It starts with a talk with a "priest", and in that talk it's the first time that the reader is able to see Meursault screaming and his true opinion is shown in the final chapter. We also have a memory retrieval of his father and how he saw an execution, but that thought didn't lead him anywhere and he expected is faith of dying, since we are all going to die one day.

Morality: 
In this chapter the concept of morality is really explored, especially in the conversation with the priest. Just because Meursault didn't believe in God it didn't mean that he was emotionless.
