Before Somalia, Amanda worked as a freelance journalist travelling to more than 50 countries. She hoped to make her big break in Somalia because of the dangerous war, drought and famine that was intensifying.

After 15 months of captivation Amanda wrote her novel, A House in the Sky, to share her experience as a hostage. Amanda founded the Global Enrichment Foundation in 2010, to create opportunities for Somalia woman to receive university scholarships .
