The highway is known to be haunted by creatures or some god's spirit such as La Llorona and chupacabras. This chapter so far tells us what has happened in the Devil's Highway in the past. The first person who died in the Devil's Highway was a guy named Melchior Diaz in 1541. Diaz died by bleeding out and by cutting his stomach open on accident because he was fighting a dog. Don Moi wanted people to come up to him and tell him how he got the things he has and how they can get there to the US. Don Moi started making a business to get people who wanted to go to the US so they can help their families with stuff and make money. If people want to go to the US they are gonna have to pay Don Moi thousands of pesos which they make in a year. Don Moi was telling the people that he will be with them every step of the way but Moi was lying to them he said that so that he can get money. The only part Don Moi was helping them was when it had to do with driving because he was too fat to walk across the border. Some will make it alive and some won't because of the struggles they are going through or are going to go through. Mendez decided to take a break at the hottest hour of the day which is around 12 pm. In my opinion, I think that wouldn't be a good idea because the people already know he lost the whole group. Mendez took the group to the wrong pathway or route. Now they have to retrace their tracks to go to the right route. Almost all their resources were gone they had no water or food left. Finally, someone is starting to realize that if they follow their tracks back they will find their way back. They had a choice to either go back to Mexico and save their own lives or go back where they started and restart their journey. Mendez didn't want to turn around because he has gone too far and he thinks salvation is nearby. He won't turn around because he might get killed by the Cerca Family 'cause he has taken the group to the wrong track. Mendez said that he wasn't going to leave the men because he is different from the rest of the coyotes but all the coyotes are the same they try to steal from the group they are supposed to be helping. The coyotes steal money then abandon them. Mendez kept on saying 3 more hours to go but that is what he kept on saying to the group. Reymundo said if they have 3 hours left then he wants Mendez to go because Reymundo knew they wouldn't make it. Mendez left the group to go get resources and he said that he is going to come back in 5 hours. When Mendez left the group a couple of hours pass by until they realize that Mendez isn't gonna come back. The group is going to follow Mendez's tracks because he abandoned them. As the men walk they are praying for salvation and dreaming of a home or their family on the beach. While Mendez and Lauro are arguing bout if they get caught. Mendez and Lauro knew if they satyed with those men they would've died. Reymundo Jr. and Reymundo Sr. died. Reymundo Jr. died because the heat and he died in his father's (Reymundo Sr.) arms. Reymundo Sr. got up and left his son laying on the ground and started walking couple steps away from his son. The men who stayed alive got into the helicopter and got brought to a safety place. The men snitched on Mendez for what he did to the group but they didn't snitched on El Negro.
