- location where the lips or the tongue obstruct the air stream
- bilabials are produced with both lips (m, p, b, w (labial-velar))
- labio-dentals are produced with front teeth and lower lip (f,v)
- (inter-)dentals are produced with the tongue between or behind the upper teeth (think, that)
- alveolars are produced with the tongue tip at the alveolar ridge behind the upper teeth (t, d, n)
- post-alveolars are produced behind the alveolar ridge, with tongue raised towards the hard plate
- palatals are produced at hard palate (yes)
- velars are produced at the soft palate (velum) (e.g. k: coat)
