Pop-it Sound it out!

A student will have a list of sight words in front of them. With each word, the student will sound out the word while pushing in the bubble on each sound. This activity can be modified to fit the needs of each student and can help ELL’s with their letter sounds. Students can be given short or longer words based on their knowledge level. 

 

Rhyming Song: Word Identification

Children will sing the song “One Two Three Four Five” fish rhyming song together. After every rhyming pair, stop and discuss with your students if these words rhyme and why they rhyme.

Letter Sound Heads Up!

The teacher will place a notecard with a letter on it to where they cannot see it but the students can. Students will then make the sound of the letter for the teacher to guess which letter it is! This could be used with upper- or lower-case letters or a mix of both to ensure every child is getting their proper level of education.

Zoo Phonics

Zoo Phonics is a multi-sensory curriculum that pairs a letter with a friend and a sound and a motion. This is great for all age groups up to first grade. This curriculum also supports ELL’s as well as has adaptations for special needs. 

Picture That!

Gather a picture book that has no words just pictures. Have the student or students use their imagination to express their ideas and create a story. A student will advance their vocab through story telling.

Circle Time!

Daily circle time is a great way for children to obtain a greater vocabulary and acquire new words. They are soaking in the words you are saying. Every number, day of the week, and weather statement.

Model Fluency in read alouds!

When you are reading to your students, model fluency by adding accurate expression to your story and words. This will model fluency and also keep your students engaged during the story. 

 

Facial Practice

While reading a story to your students, take the time to pause and have your students show using their facial expressions and their emotions how the character must be feeling in the story. This is also modeling fluency by having the students see words and relate them to their understanding of feelings. 

 Classroom Mad-Libs

On an anchor chart, create a mad-libs story that your class can fill in. They are learning to retell the story but maybe just in a sillier way than before! This activity is great for all grade levels and learning levels. 

 
Fractured Fairytales

Fractured Fairytales are a great way for students to not only use their imagination, but to also practice retelling a story with a beginning middle and end. This activity can be done as a group or individually depending on what works best for your class.
