My Experiences in the Wild

My experiences in the wild were that I encountered snakes. These snakes were very dangerous because wild snakes can be poisonous and just imagine if it would have bitten any of the people that were there or me. We would end off in a bad situation. When I went to hike in Auburn, I was climbing some rocks but my mom told me to watch out and to not take the next step because there was a snake below my foot slithering through those rocks so I quickly yelled out for people to watch out and not get hurt.

In my free time I like to plan ahead of time to go out and experience new places. Growing up, I watched youtube videos and still do to see what places are close around where I live and to see where would be somewhere nice to visit or hike. Hiking is one of my favorite things to do because I see a lot of nature that I don’t see normally in my everyday life. For example I do not go hiking and end up at a beautiful waterfall seeing the water come from miles and miles away and feel the freshness from nature. Camping I can say I went a few times with my family, but it is scary because You can easily get lost or run out of supplies.

I think as I grow older, I would like to keep on visiting new places and travel more out of California in order to see more beauty and be surrounded by more greenery. Being able to disconnect for a bit and forget about everything feels relaxing because it can cause you to be unstressed from the normal world we live in. And advice i would give to my siblings or people

I know that they should feel free when they go out camping or hiking, they shouldn’t worry about what they need to do. Just disconnect peacefully and happy:)

SUMMARY:
In Into the Wild, we learn about a young boy who comes from a wealthy family and chooses to follow a journey where he is destined to find himself. His name was Christopher Johnson McCandless. In the first chapter, we find out that he is spotted in Fairbanks as a hitchiker (pg.5) His purpose was to live off the land for a few months in Denali National Park. He was prepared to face any obstacles because he had his rifle (pg.5) for self-defense. Though the only thing he had as guidance was his road map(pg.5) and backpack (pg.4) which seemed fine to him. He wanted to encounter challenges because he believed that that's what real life was. For all that mattered, Chris was determined to go find his meaning in life.

ANALYSIS:
As much as I want to consider Chris a selfish person for leaving his family, I understand his willingness to go find himself unaccompanied. Because everything was handed to him, I would go off and do something on my own to work for it and feel the satisfaction of achievement. I believe that is what Christopher is trying to experience on his own terms.

#hitchhiker4life #oftothewild #Alaska

.

SUMMARY:
In this chapter, there were some foreshadowing indicating that something terrible might of happened to Chris. Unintentially,a couple went through a stampede trail (pg.10) where they encountered rivers (pg.10) along the way. In 1961, Fairbanks won a contract that benefited them with new roads (pg.10) where vehicles(pg.11) were able to now transport. When they got to west of Healy, they found the thrid bus (pg.11) that had been there for hunters and trappers. As they got closer, they noticed the whole vehicle was destroyed and found a blue sleeping bag where they found Christophers body that has been sitting there for a while. They had also found a SOS note (pg.13) where chris was seeking for help after he goes out to collect berries.

ANALYSIS:
At the end of this chapter, I realized that it was meant for the Anchorage couple to find where Chris had been this whole time. Although I do feel extremely bad for Chris not being able to receive the help he wished for, maybe it was just time for him to go. :(

#RIPChris #142Bus #theyfoundchris

Summary: We find out at the beginning of this chapter what Chris was truly hoping to find in his journey. One of the main things Chris wanted was excitement (pg.15). He was now located in Carthage (pg.15) where he meets Wayne whom he worked with. Wayne described him as a hard worker and also mentions he is a very social person and leaves everyone he meets with a good impression. Chris goes back to talk about his old life where his parents (pg.21) would give him everything he needed for his education (pg.20) and personal life. Chris wanted to adapt himself to a new life of his own destiny (pg.23)

Analysis:
I think Chris must've really disliked his life because of his urgency trying to escape his nonperfect life. Although Wayne describes him as a very social person, Chris might not stick long enough with those people due to his past relationship problems. I understand Chris's point of view and probably not the way he exactly feels but I do think he was being a bit selfish to the rest of his family.

#FindMyself #FindAJob #Adventure

Summary:
In this chapter, Chris is found in Lake Mead National Recreation where there is nothing but dry desert(pg.25). We can assume Chris got his car (pg.26) stuck on the edge of the riverbed just as the rangers(pg.26) found it beneath a tarpaulin. Chris was willing to sacrifice his only way of transportation which was his yellow Datsun for him to avoid the federal government's (pg.28) questions. Mccandless's adventure(pg.30) in Lake Med was extremely dangerous because, in the month of July, the temperature was so high, he experienced a heat stroke. For him, it didn't matter what he had to go through because although he was alone (pg.31) he was "unheeded. happy, and near to the wild heart of life. He later paddled(pg.34) his way to Yuma, Mexico, then Las Vegas where he found a job and continues his journey...

Analysis:
I think Chris is being a very brave guy in this chapter due to the circumstances he is facing and his courage to still continue with his journey. As well as the sacrifices he is willing to make even if it costs him. This exposes his characteristics even more in the book. This gives me the curiosity of what else Chris would do in the future.

#MyCarIsStuck #Paddling4Life #BurntAllMyMoney

Summary:
McCandless hitched down the US Highway where he stayed at Bullhead City. He found a job at McDonald's (pg.40). He was a very slow-paced employee but they needed more workers so they gave Chris a chance. A worker named Zarza admitted that others including herself were trying to be nice to him by offering soap (pg.41), riding, or anything nice he tried to stay away from them because he did not want to have any close relationships with them. He was living in a mobile home (pg.41) but then he encountered an old man who was in an old trailer (pg.41) that wasn't really his. Later on in Nailand, a 17-year-old girl names Tracy developed a huge crush on Chris. McCandless did a lot of socializing (pg.44) but like we all know those relationships won't last long enough... and like predicted later that week he was taking off to Salton City.

Analysis:
It's funny to think that at this point Chris is working considering he burnt all his money to start on this journey. But I think it's different for him because this is money he is actually earning on his own. I do still think him being close to people and making them feel accompanied and just leaving after is kind of inconsiderate on his part.

#NoFriendshipsAllowed #WorkForALiving #SocksSuck

Summary:
Through this chapter, McCandless meets a very wise old man named Ron. Ron is an eighty-year-old who he met while hitchhiking to Hot Springs. He used to be an alcoholic due to the loss of his children and wife. To ease the pain, he was adopting (pg.50) kids to save his loneliness. He then became attached to Chris and wanted to adopt him as well because of the bond they have created. We also learn in this chapter that Chris carries a leather belt (pg.51) and draws his destinations or places he has visited throughout to keep as a memory. As usual, Chris ended up leaving and Ron was heartbroken but for some reason, he came back to Ron. McCandless was located around Coachella at that time and Ron wanted to keep everything as a memory so he decided to buy a video camera(pg.54) to capture every moment he was spending with Chris. Franz was so attached he directed Chris to the question of whether Chris would let him adopt him. Chris felt uncomfortable so he would just change the subject. He wanted to invade that kind of intimate friendship (pg.57). Later on, Chris asked Ron to drive him North because that was his destination, to Alaska. While being over there, Chris would send letters to Franz and give him advice about his lifestyle (pg.57).

Analysis:
Through Chris's journey, I think he's learned a lot and now that Ron has approached him the way he did, maybe he'll change Chris's point of view. It is very truly sad that Ron got attached to him so quickly and that Chris just leaves him heartbroken :(. I know Rons intentions are nothing but good and he wants Chris to be a part of his family once he is gone because he wants to continue the legacy. But I also do think Ron is being a little too comfortable and overwhelming the relationship they have into insisting on the question to Chris. This chapter might be the saddest one yet but we have to continue keeping in mind that Chris wants to be out in the wilderness and continue his journey.

#heartbroken #friendhip #OMGHotSprings

Summary:
In this chapter, we are finally discovering why Chris is so isolated (pg.61) and is so opposed to having any kind of friendships or relationships(pg.61). He explains how both he and his father were stubborn(pg.64) and the kind of hypocrisy (pg.64) lifestyle his parents followed. Chris had already his plan prepared and he knew he was eventually going to rebel (pg.64). He wrote a letter to Chris explaining what his plan was all bout and the perfect timing of when n where he was going to take action. We also find out about Chris's love life. He was so focused on his personal life he did not have time for any girls or relationships. The life of their parents gave Chris a bad outlook of what a marriage is all about. Chris was never sexually active with anyone and there was no evidence that he might've been intimately drawned into men.

Analysis:
WOW! I think Chris seeing their parent's relationship really took a big role in the way he views and feels about relationships. I think the only good relationship he has was with his sister but other than that he is so confident in perceiving other relationships so openly because he is afraid. Chris Mcandless could be everything but not a person whom you'd wanna have a close or intimate relationship with. His only way to escape was to rebel and determine himself to do something which he was very confident to do due to his various reasons.

#rebel #ChrisWantsToBeAlone #ViginChris

Summary:
Through this chapter, we learn more about Chris McCandless and other young men his age that has experienced the same idealistic (pg.71) journey. Chris kept a journal (pg. 72)where he'd always write about his life and what he had upcoming. He wanted to go out in the wilderness to find all of his answers to his problems but couldn't because he ate a poisonous berry. Through these men, John Mallon, Gene Rosellini, and Waterman we know they all come from wealthy(pg.73) families. They were all similar to Chris because they wanted to become independent (pg.74) with no one else helping them. Another similarity they had was about the harsh side of nature (pg.85). But unlike all these other men, McCandless wasn't mentally ill or incompetent he was unique.

Analysis:
It's very crazy to think Chris wasn't the only one who attempted this kind of dangerous adventure. Although he is truly lucky that he had everything and gave it away just like that but yet again, he had his reasons. Im, sure he could've connected with these guys but it's truly insane how going out into nature, into the wilderness to seek that comfort could have such a huge impact on someone's life. It gets me thinking that you could be the wealthiest person on earth, but that doesn't bring you happiness because you could be living a miserable life.

#NatureIsLife #SelfIndependent #OutInTheWild

Summary:
In this chapter, we are familiarizing ourselves with people who were like McCandless. We get introduced to Everett Ruess who also eventually changed his name to Nemo(pg.89). We learn that he and Chris want to go out into the wilderness(pg.87) for the same purpose which is to find their destination. Everett was just as wealthy and had great educational ethics as Chris but they wanted something different. At sixteen years old, Ruess started hitchhiking (pg.89) through Yosemite in the summer. Ruess explains to us in this chapter that he wanted to be in the wild and plod into jungles and chinning up ledges of cliffs. Everett and McCandless were both very romantic towards nature and I think the more they experienced, the more they fell in love with. Towards the end of the chapter, we find out how Everett Russ craved his name on the Navajo Mountains (pg.90) that are described as canyons(pg.88). Many people and family members had different assumptions on how Ruess spent his last days and how he died.

Analysis:
To my knowledge, I knew there were other people that might've gone through the same thing although I would've thought they were for different purposes. I do see that they all follow the same reason, especially with Ruess. Both him and McCandless I feel like they would've understood each other but yet again if they would've met, I think they'd still wanna go their separate ways. It would have been nice to see McCandless encounter similar people like Ruess throughout the book because maybe it could've had a different ending.

#WeFoundMcCandless'sTwin #RomanticBirds #GoOutIntoTheWilderness

Summary:
Through this chapter, the news was finally revealed to Chris's family about his death. It all started when the newspaper was published on September 13, 1992. The NYT was trying to identify a dead body of a hiker. They mention the diary (pg.98) McCandless used to write about his adventure. They describe him wearing a blue sweatshirt (pg.99) that might've helped lead them somewhere he has worked with. Unfortunately, it led them nowhere. This newspaper (pg.100) was going basically viral and im Gal lien was able to recognize who they were talking about, and with no hesitation, he immediately thought of Alex which was the name Chris changed it to. After that, through the AM radio (pg.100) Wayne was mentioned listening to it and he quickly communicated with Westernburg in time for him to listen to Paul Harvey's last words. Eventually, Westernburg was able to help the police figure out who this man was with McCandless's social security (pg.101). Later on, Sam who was Chris's half-brother found the article, about a hiker, and as he read he felt a feeling of very deep sorrow for their family. As he started to add things up and went to see Chris's photograph in the police department he knew it was Chris. Never in his whole life did he think he had to bring such painful news to his family.

Analysis:
I think this might've been my second favorite chapter in the book. Although it was short it covered everything pretty well. The more we kept reading I was very anxious to know how they got the news and how they were able to figure out it was Chris's body. I think something major that came into play to find this mysterious hiker was definitely his diary and the people he met along his journey. Without Westerburg knowing, they would have probably not figured out who he was and I got really surprised Chris actually left his information in one of his files. Along with that, we find that McCandless had a half-brother, and it's very sad how there was no more time left for them to build a stronger bond. The saddest thing is how he has to be the one to deliver the bad news to his family:(.

#LongLiveChris #ChrisHasAHalfBrother #OldSchool

Summary:
In this chapter, we learn about Samuel Walter McCandless who is Chris's dad. He is a wealthy man who owns a home in Chesapeake Beach and a townhouse (pg.104). He was also NASA'S(pg.104) manager for a Seasat launch. We learn a lot about Walt and they talk very deeply about his personality and that he could be dark and mercurial(pg.105). Once he started to become more distant from his son Chris, Walt became more tolerant and softer. They also talked about his background and how he did so well in school and now we can see where Chris got that from. Soon after Walt separated from his other marriage he met Billie and they fell in love and that is when Chris Johnson McCandless came to life. They started describing how Chris's childhood was and how he excelled in school but was always trying to get away from schoolwork or accelerated programs. Chris was never antisocial and he actually had friends !! which is surprising since we know he is not one to have close friendships. Although it does mention that he was never bothered to be lonely (pg.107), instead he liked it. Because of their parent's absence due to work, he and his sister Carine became really close. They would go and road trips and when they were out in the forests (pg.108), Chris loved it. Chris also loved his grandfather(pg.109) who also liked hiking and we can guess that's where he inherits wilderness.

Analysis:
It's really nice to hear about Chris's childhood because throughout the book we learn about his personality but we don't know what got him to be the way he is or his experiences that build up his traits. Now we learn why or how he and his sister are so close and why Chris is open to having such a strong bond with her. We also discover that Chris always excelled in school ever since he was small. Because his parents were so wealthy, Chris was offered a position in NASA at six years old which is crazy because I'm sure no 6 year old has the same experience. We know that Chris is unbothered whether he is lonely or not because he enjoys both either way. I also think because his parents were kind of absent through his life, he never had a good relationship with them and also experienced family problems. As he grew older, McCandless was close with his grandfather and they would go hiking and Chris really enjoyed it and never wanted to stop. I think that when Chris experienced that feeling he just wanted to remain there and escape everything else. He really felt free.

#HighIQ #Chris'sChildhood #FailedPhysics

Summary:
Through this chapter that I have been anticipating throughout this book is finally here! The truth (pg.117) finally unfolds and we find out the real reason why Christopher John McCandless escapes his life. The chapter first started talking about the father and son relationship both Chris and Walt had back then. Chris really admired his dad and was grateful (pg.118) for him. Carine, his sister talks about how Chris is overconfident (pg.118) and whenever he does something, nothing ever goes wrong. He used to be such an enthusiastic (pg.119) person who liked school but over time, he started to show a darker side of him, and the reason is finally revealed. When Chris spent his summer in El Segundo neighborhood, he pieced his dad's previous marriage and divorce altogether and finds out his dad is polygamous. Meaning he has 2 wives, is having intimate relationships(pg.121) with them, and having children with them at the same time. Chris also finds out that Walt had another son(pg.121) that might be the same age as him. He decides to keep all this within and that is when he decides to escape from all the family drama but especially the reality.

Analysis:
WOW!! I never expected this to be the main reason why Chris makes the decision to getaway. I did predict that one reason might be because of his parents but to find something this disappointing is just mind-blowing. The way they described the amount of time their family spent together now all makes sense. I don't understand the purpose of Walt's decision and actions to be this way. Was he not satisfied with the one family he had? I feel very sorry for Chris and I believe his anger was so big he was able to make the decision to leave everything behind and go off on his own. He sure had many questions to be answered but he didn't care. I think if I were Chris I would confront my father.

#Walt'sInfidelity #ChrisHasATwin #TrustIssues

Summary:
In this chapter, we learn more about Carine and Chris's relationship. While Carine stares at some photos framed at the Virginia house, she remembers when they first got Buck. Buck was a sheepdog and Chris was crazy about him. Later on, Buck got a really bad injury and couldn't walk. Carine thought what would have happened if Chris had taken Buck through his journey but it be too much danger(pg.128) for him. Carine McCandless was a very tall girl just as tall as Chris and she was very energetic(pg.129). She was able to build an "extremely good" relationship with her parents after Chris disappeared. Carine still grieves (pg.129) deeply for his brother and cries every day because of the absence she feels. Later on September 17, 1992, Fish pulls up in Carine's driveway to give her the worst news about Chris. When Fish finally tells her the news, Carine's eyes blurred (pg.130), and started shaking her head because she didn't want to believe it was true. After 5 hours later, she asked Fish to drive her to Billie and Walts's house but before making a stop at the church. Earlier that evening Sam confirmed it was Chris's body and after twenty-four hours Carine picked up his ashes(pg.131). During the flight back home and at Chesapeake Beach, both Billie and Carine lost their appetite (pg.131) and started to lose many pounds. Christopher John McCandless really had a huge negative impact on their family's lives physically and mentally due to his death.

Analysis:
Carine's reaction was the most heartbreaking part of this chapter. I don't think I would've reacted any differently. She lost a very important person in her life and just the thought of not having Chris around completely now for a lifetime is even more painful. I do know it will take a while for her to ease from the pain but hopefully, her mom and dad are there as support. The way she was described ad a happy woman and energetic may be part of that would start to be gone. I do hope she doesn't eventually start to show a darker side of her. On the other hand, I do think she is a strong woman and she will get through by the time. I also think if Chris had taken Buck, the story would be completely different and there would have been a higher chance Chris would still be alive.

#We'reHereForCarine #Buckely #Can'tGetOverIt

Summary:
In this chapter, we learn that the author of this book, Jon Krakauer wasnt any different from Chris McCandless. Something they made both feels fulfilled was to climb (pg.133). He talks about how going into the wild for McCandless wasn´t at all with a fatal (pg.134) intention nor a suicide that was planned. He thought of it this way because that is how Krackuer felt when he first went on the climb. For him, it is something unplanned and something you cannot control. He then starts talking about himself and how he claimed the Devil's Thumb. His reason for this was his passion (pg.135) as a youth to do something in his life that hell be remembered for. Krakauer was so passionate about climbing that he didn't care what he had to go through, it was something from his inner torment. He admired it so much he saw it as a fascination (pg.135). Without hesitation, he went and quit his job, got into a car, and departed (pg.136) for Alaska. As well as McCandless, Krackeur was also very conservative with any kind of intimacy (pg.137) relationship because he was so focused on himself. He was so cautious and thought thoroughly about any consequences or conflict he may come across. He had to poles on his back that way when he is skiing he could have a way back up if he would've lied on a pole of the crevasse. We also find out he carries a map(pg.140) with him and stays in the ice cap for days and he even wanted to stay for a month but he did not carry sufficient supplies. While he kept staying there, he lost all sort of communication and was almost out of food. When he went to bed on May 10, he heard a faint momentarily whine. When he opened his tent, he just say clouds lifted and nothing on site, Cuple minutes later the whine returned and the plane (pg.141) had passed over him. He then felt abandoned, lonely and found himself sobbing which was an embarrassment to him. When he woke up on May 11, he packed and began skiing toward the base of the Thumb. He was mentally unprepared.

Analysis:
Who would've thought that the author of this book was nothing different than the main character in this book? It makes sense now how he talks so passionate about Chris´s adventures but because he can relate. He writes in detail and I think even would've thrown some of his own feelings in there. We certainly learn a lot more about the author and his experience climbing the Devil's Thumb. I think he was very fortunate to be able to have accomplished that in his life.

#TheDevilsThumb #GoForWhatIBelieveIN #OnlyPlaceToGoWasDown

Summary:
Through this chapter, we are still going along with Krackauer's journey into climbing the Devil's thumb. It starts off with him still staying in the tent (pg.145) for three more days but felt more like forever to him. As he was waiting there for the whether to become less stormy, he read and was smoking on his cigarette. He was thinking about what had happened when he attempted climbing the thumb. He was so bored, he got his cigar and rolled it into a joint and smoked it down to the coach, meaning he got high. He started to feel more suffocated, cramped up, and terribly hungry. He tried to make oatmeal and he felt like it was a long process due to his condition. When he took a step outside he immediately smelled something burning. Next thing you know he was beating on fire (pg.147). He was able to control the situation well because he thought that he has been taught that way by his father. Krackeurs then begins to talk about his father, their relationship, and why it turned out to be something very awful. His father was a mountaineer who taught him to climb. He was very competitive (pg.147) and wanted his kids to be the best at everything because if they weren't then they were the worst. His father expected him and his siblings to excel in every academic class from elementary to high school. Jon starts to now understand the reason why his father persuade him into doing so many things and he took it for granted. But because of how his father's behavior started to develop badly, he pushed Krackeour away. It became so bad, he committed suicide (pg.149) in front of him. He also thought about the irony(pg.15) between him and his father and how the devil's thumb was just like getting to that medical school. On the afternoon of May 15, Krackeur finally gets to the top of the Devil's Thumb. When he finally returned to Boulder, he told everyone he had accomplished climbing the thumb. Suddenly no one believed him, no one cared. It's as if what he did, was not anything to be proud of.

Analysis:
Krackeurs journey was definitely a tough and scary one. Especially how the Devil's Thumb was described and how we saw it in the video that was shown to us in class. His relationship with his father was similar to McCandless's. I do think Jons's father was more aggressive towards his feelings. Although Jon wasn't clear about his father's mistake, he did sound like he pushed him away very badly. I think Krackeurs father would feel nice knowing Jon actually came into realization on why he pushed him so hard to be the best at everything and the opportunity he had to grow more mature. Finally, how he mentions that no one made him feel like he accomplished something big made him come into a realization that even if he got away from his father it changed absolutely nothing.

#YoungAndWild #IrrationalBehaivor #Be#1

Summary:
In this chapter, we take an overview of McCandless´s journey before his death. On April 15, he left Carthage, hikes (pg.159) across the Canadian border 3 days later. He is then 1,523 from Fairbanks. When he arrives there, he met Stuckey who was a bald cheerful 63 year old man. He described McCandless as a courteous (pg.159) who seemed not bad educated at all. When him and Stuckey went grocery shopping, Stuckey was picking out some rice but on the other hand, McCandless wanted to discover new plants (pg.159). He wanted to learn about berries and things like that. After, they drove to University of Alaska campus and they talked about their lives. Stuckey insisted that he calls his parents because he couldn't imagine being in their position. When Chris got dropped off, he stayed there and soon found a used gun but made a deal of exchanging it with rounded boxes. He then moves four miles down and sets tent on a patch of hard frozen ground, When he woke up early morning on April 28, he walked down the highway where he encountered a vehicle (pg.161) where they gave him a lift. They guy in the car was Jim Gallien. When he dropped off Chris, he couldn't help to notice the excitement on his face to be in Alaska alone. He carried a journal where he kept track of all the animals he had hunted and one of the biggest ones were a moose. Although the moose didn't last for long because he got the wrong instructions by someone. Since it was summer the ice was melting and create rivers so instead, he took the 142 bus.

Analysis:
Chris was really in a tough position but I think his ability to persevere and his strategies helped him create a better outcome for him. He does travel a lot and luckily, he is able to find people that help him out throughout the way. Its interesting that not only did he want to admire nature but he also wanted to seek a deeper meaning like it mentioned about him learning about various plants and berries.

#OnTheMove #ExcitedToBeInAlaska #MooseHunting

Summary:
After a year has passed, Chris makes the decision to take an easier route than crossing the Teklanika River. The river (pg.173) is caused by the fast melting snowpack and has a very strong current. Unlike McCandless, Jon did have a map because Chris wanted to be more old school and get rid of the map (pg.173) to figure it out on his own. He had no salvation when he could've if he had the map. There was a zip line he could have taken that was much safer. When McCandless gets on the trail some other two men come and join him but he was actually happy he had some company (pg.176). Their names were Samuel and Thompson and they were also hunters (pg.177). When they found McCandless´s body, they thought the big skeleton was a caribou. When they say on the article that Chris had put on his journal a moose, they both said that the guy was no Alaskan because he´d know the difference. Soon after they thought of Chris as incompetent(pg.177). When they visited the bus, they saw how many people have been there as well. They also get shown a picture Chris had left when he had killed the moose which meant both of the hunters were mistaken. At the end of the chapter, they kind of compare him to other people who were just like him or close to being like him. Being just as green and just as eager.

Analysis:
I think Chris was not really thinking though when he gave up his map. I get that he wanted to figure out everything on his own but, that was over-exaggerated. He could've simply seen the map and gone through a route that sounds more like Chris's environment rather than being stuck in the 142 bus for days. It would've also been easy to return to the normal world but unluckily he didn't make it. I was pleasantly surprised Chris was happy about the two people that brought him company especially because he is not one to like having friendships or people really close to him. It becomes interesting at the end how we learn of others who were or shared some similarities with Chris.

#AlwaysCarryAMap #TakeASaferWay #Dangerousiver

Summary:
In this chapter, McCandless went back to the 142 bus on July 8 where sadly, he died. When he went back, he began hunting and gathering once again after being long for a couple of months. He has his journal (pg.188) where he writes down every animal he had eaten and what meat he had hunted. Despite that, he was still eating very few calories and was burning more. Through this time, McCandless was reading several books but the last one he read was Doctor Zhivago. He scribbled throughout the book specific words like nature (pg.189)/purity and happiness (pg.189). After that many had their assumptions about how Chris really died. It was claimed that because he ate too many potato seeds(pg.190) he was poisoned by it. Secondly, was that he was eating plants(pg.193) at the wrong time which made him feel very weak. Apparently, the plants he was consuming were edible but at the time he was eating them, was not the appropriate time to eat them because the plants became poisonous during the winter in Alaska. They concluded that the reason why McCandless died wasn't that he ate anything toxic, it was because the seeds he was eating were slowly molding in his body which was never a sufficient reason to end his life. A professor started to mention how there was a way Chris could've still saved his life but he was far too weak to save his life and go hunt for food. Chris was basically paralyzed and couldn't move but luckily he was writing in his journal. The last thing he wrote on August 2 was "terrible wind". Later then, he wrote on August 5 "Day 100! Made It! But in weakest condition". He had made it up until August 12 explaining what he has done to try to save his life. He wrote in block letters a note asking for help and letting them know how went out to collect berries. He had actually put his real on it. After August 13, Chris just tallies the days he was still alive, and on the other side of a blank page, he writes a goodbye letter thanking the lord for a happy life. He had crawled into his sleeping bag where he died unconsciously because his body was too weak, it had betrayed him, his face almost skeletal, alone, and young.

Analysis:
Unfortunately, this book has come to a very sad ending. I think what makes it even sadder for me is that this is based on a true story. It is sad to hear those last words from Chris but I am glad he was able to enjoy the life he wanted for a while. I don't think Chris did deserve to die this way unless he was actually a very cruel person. Starvation is one of the most painful and slow ways to die. I do wish Chris would've been accompanied or would've kept the map. I would've liked to know what his life after the wild turned out. Although I do think that if he would've not died, this book would not exist and we would not know what McCandless had done.

#LongLiveChristopherMcCandless #TrappedInTheWild #HappyLife

Initially, they were supposed to walk there but Billie insisted to take a helicopter(pg.201) because she wanted to follow the Stampede Trail Chris has gone. When they slowly notice the bus, it appeared as a small object and it only took them 15 minutes to get there and it took Chris four days. When the helicopter landed, there was pure silence(pg.201). Billie started describing the bus and how she thought it was smaller. Billie and Walt walk through the bus and noticed why it was so appealing to Chris. While Walt comes back from the street he finds Billie sitting on the mattress (pg.202) where Chris had died. Surprisingly, there were no tears. Instead, she found silverware from their house, his handwriting, and a toothbrush. She smells his pants and she smiles painfully. They walk around for two hours and leave a suitcase with supplies and a bible(pg.202) Chris owned when he was a child. Walt just reflects upon the fact that he is there and he was glad. He felt a small solace and he was grateful for it. In the last paragraph. Billies feelings are being expressed and she wishes Chris would've still lived, she would want to know everything but it was a very hard loss and it will be like that for the rest of her life. When they finally leave, they just see the bus become smaller (pg.203), and then it's gone.

Analysis:
I feel extremely sorry for Billie, not so much for Walt because it was his fault Chris even left in the first place. I would've liked for Walt to know that Chris knew about his infidelity and that was the reason he was where he was. But it is too late for all that. I do hope Billie recovers and although it will be hard for her every day, she will have to let go someday. She shouldn't hold in her feelings as she did on the bus where she sat on Chris's mattress with no tears. I think she knew more than anyone that going on that bus was the most painful thing she had to do ever since she was told that her son was dead.

#Revisiting142Bus #

Summary:
In this article, we learn the truth of what really kills Christopher McCandless. Chris has lived his life gathering and hunting for a very long time. He had accidentally eaten the potato seeds(¶4) which is what caused his death. Jon had discovered that the seeds had some sort of toxicity(¶5) which eventually made Chris die. According to Jon, those seeds would've killed Chris regardless over time. Jon had sent those seeds to a lab and paid about $20,000 from his money to get to the bottom of Chris's death. Krackeurs hypothesis was that the seeds contained a chemical called L-canavanine (¶9). It turns out, the seed had a compound(¶14) that would come out during the winter to protect itself from people eating it. This eventually made it become toxic. After running labs, and researching Jon Krackeur finally figured out what caused Chris's death. He also mentions that we must be aware of anything we eat. Finally, he addresses that if Chris would've not been weakened (¶20) he would have made it through and survived the wild.

Analysis:
I think Jon Krackeur is insanely determined to follow through trying to figure out exactly what kind of seeds were the cause of Chris's death. He went all about his research, invested money, time, waited for lab results, etc.. just to know what happened to Chris. He must've really admired him because he had such a great interest in his life. It's also interesting to know how plants have a certain strategy to protect themselves in different seasons. I do also agree with Jon and think Chris would've survived more time in the wild and eventually gotten home.

#ToxicSeeds #BeAwareOfWhatYouEat #GoingBroke

Ever since I was a toddler, my mom would travel back and forth from the US to Mexico. She would take me and my siblings along almost every summer to visit my grandparents and family members. During those times spent in Mexico, we would go visit different small cities and admire the things around them. That is when I started to enjoy traveling. Although now, I do think I'd enjoy it more if it was just myself or with close friends. I always liked sitting on the window side because I had a better view of the clouds and I've always had the idea of that being what "heaven" looked like. Traveling is something I enjoy and don't take for granted because I know not everyone has the opportunity to do it. What also is very exciting about it is the destination it's taking me...

Just as McCandless decided to go off and live off his own will, he has somewhat inspired me to do the same for myself. I tend to think of others before myself and sometimes overthink if I should follow what I want even though it might affect others such as my loved ones. Something I do aspire to do in the future is to either have traveling be a part of my job or have a good job to become financially stable and travel to visit many different places around the world. Ideally for me, traveling being part of my job would be the best option because I would love to get paid as I'm moving from different destinations. I want to try any kind of different dishes, fruits, vegetables, drinks from all around the world whether it's from Japan, Greece, Paris, Brazil, etc... Traveling to these places for me is the chance of a lifetime!!

#TravelTheWorld #TryNewFood #IndulgeYourLife

Chris Reflection

Throughout the book, my feelings towards Christopher McCandless definitely varied. At the begging of the book I did think it was very selfish of him leaving his family behind. With no letter written to them about where he was going to be or what was his motive to leave everything behind. Something that really stood out to me that sort of bothered me the most is the fact that he liked to suffer. He had everything he could've used to survive! For instance, his car,his money and the map that could've saved his life. Instead of paddling on his own risking his life he could've used his own vehicle. I get that his whole purpose was to figure out everything on his own but there were times he over exaggerated. I also disliked the fact he pushes everyone away. He doesn't give himself the opportunity to be loved or cared by others. For example poor Ron wanting to adopt him and even bought a camera to conserve all of their memories together :(( Chris also pushes away a seventeen year old girl Tracy during his week long visit in Slabs who had a huge crush on him. But because he had many family problems, that remarked him to not want to do anything with anyone. I believe that is something that also builds upon Christopher's solidarity. On the other hand, I think Chris was overall a very responsible kid. Although his absence really took effect on many people, at least he donated all his savings to a charity rather than taking the chances of someone perhaps stealing it. I also like the fact that him going out to the wilderness is for a good purpose. He shows great admiration towards nature and I think I would prefer him doing that 10 times better than him escaping his family to go do other unpleasantly things. I do feel sympathy for Chris because what lead him into making the decision to run off was his family. In his position I would feel really lonely but he got through those 113 best days of his life. Well some..... After discovering the reason behind his actions makes me admire him. He did something not all of us would and that is putting his life at risk if it means leaving his absolute best life. He did the impossible to get out of a toxic family because it meant his future,it meant his happiness.

#FollowYourDreams #FindYourself #LetYourselfBeLoved
