The battle was fought between the Imperial Japanese Navy, commanded by Admiral Isoroku Yamamoto, and the United States Navy, under the command of Admiral Chester W. Nimitz. The United States had successfully broken Japanese codes and intercepted communications regarding the attack on Midway Atoll, giving them a crucial advantage. The battle primarily involved aircraft carriers and their accompanying fleets. The Japanese aimed to lure the American carriers into a trap and eliminate them, establishing dominance in the Pacific. However, due to strategic errors and intelligence failures, the Japanese plan was foiled.

The Battle of Stalingrad actually began in August 1942, not July. It was one of the most significant battles of World War II, fought between Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union in and around the city of Stalingrad (now Volgograd) from August 23, 1942, to February 2, 1943. The Battle of Stalingrad was a brutal and decisive confrontation, often characterized by its fierce urban combat and high casualty rates. Both sides suffered immense losses, but the Soviet Union ultimately emerged victorious, marking a turning point in the war on the Eastern Front.

The Battle of the Bulge, also known as the Ardennes Counteroffensive, began on December 16, 1944, during World War II. It was a major German offensive campaign launched through the densely forested Ardennes region of Wallonia in Belgium, France, and Luxembourg. The battle was primarily fought between German forces, led by Field Marshal Gerd von Rundstedt, and Allied forces, mainly American, British, and Canadian troops, under the overall command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. The German objective was to split the Allied armies, recapture the Belgian port of Antwerp, and encircle and destroy four Allied armies, giving the Germans a decisive victory. They hoped that a successful offensive would force the Western Allies to negotiate a peace treaty in favor of Germany.

On January 27, 1945, the Auschwitz concentration camp complex, located in Nazi-occupied Poland, was liberated by Soviet forces during World War II. Auschwitz was the largest and most notorious of the Nazi concentration and extermination camps, where millions of people, primarily Jews, but also Poles, Romani people, Soviet prisoners of war, and others, were systematically murdered. The liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet troops brought an end to the horrors inflicted upon its prisoners. However, what they found there was a grim testament to the atrocities committed by the Nazi regime. The liberators encountered emaciated survivors, piles of corpses, gas chambers, crematoria, and evidence of mass murder on an industrial scale.

the United States dropped an atomic bomb nicknamed "Little Boy" on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. This event marked the first use of a nuclear weapon in warfare. The bombing resulted in widespread destruction, devastation, and loss of life, with estimates of immediate deaths ranging from 70,000 to 80,000 people. The decision to drop the atomic bomb was made by President Harry S. Truman and his advisers, who believed that it would hasten the end of World War II and ultimately save lives by bringing about a swift Japanese surrender. The attack on Hiroshima was followed by another atomic bomb, "Fat Man," dropped on the city of Nagasaki on August 9, 1945, resulting in tens of thousands of additional casualties

On September 2, 1945, Japan formally surrendered, officially ending World War II. The surrender took place aboard the USS Missouri, anchored in Tokyo Bay. The ceremony was presided over by General Douglas MacArthur, who represented the Allied Powers, and Japanese officials, including Foreign Minister Mamoru Shigemitsu and General Yoshijirō Umezu, who signed the Instrument of Surrender on behalf of Japan. The surrender followed Japan's acceptance of the terms of the Potsdam Declaration, issued by the United States, Great Britain, and China on July 26, 1945, which called for Japan's unconditional surrender and outlined the terms of post-war occupation and reconstruction. Despite initial resistance from some factions within the Japanese government and military, particularly the militarists who advocated for a fight to the end, the devastation wrought by the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, along with the Soviet Union's declaration of war and invasion of Manchuria, convinced Japan's leaders that surrender was inevitable.
