Unit 4 built upon the foundation established in the previous units by expanding upon the Research Design stage of the research process. I learnt that qualitative and quantitative methods of research represent extreme ends of the spectrum whereas mixed methods research provides a middle ground which combines varying amounts of emphasis on each method. Qualitative methods provide advantages such as the details which can be gathered to explain the “why” to a phenomenon. Quantitative research on the other hand provides advantages such as the ability to generalize results as the study utilizes a larger quantity of subjects. These concepts were clear and familiar.

I found the criteria for measuring attitudes fascinating and learnt the official names of the techniques (some of which I have completed for surveys) used to gather this information. I understood sampling the best as much of the information was presented in different ways and creating the concept map allowed me to process what I had learnt.
