Your health, safety and welfare at work is very important. if you are new to work or inexperienced in a job then you are more likely to have an accident.
Statistics on health and safety indicate that young people in the 16-24 age group in particular have more accidents than older people at work. This may be because:
• They have less experience.
• Are worried about asking questions.
• Have had less training.
• Are less aware of risks and hazards around them.

Health and Safety is a big part of employment and working life.
The law sets out legal duties to ensure that you and your colleagues are kept safe at work. EVERYONE in the workplace has a part in making it safe for themselves and others around them.
All workplaces can have possible dangers whether they are factories, building sites, offices or shops.
Your employer will give you safety training relevant to your workplace and the activities you will be doing.
Always carry out your work in the way you have been trained, even if someone else tells you it is alright not to.
By working safely it can prevent;
• Injuries, illness or death to yourself and colleagues.
• Financial effects such as lost wages for workers or lost working hours and higher insurance costs for your employer.
• Affecting work schedules and putting more strain on employees

Reporting H&S Incidents and Accidents

It is important to remember to report any incidents or accidents related to Health and Safety to Access Training.

This includes "near misses" where someone could have been injured.

You can inform Access Training through your Tutor and through the Learner Progress Review.

Safeguarding against Extremism and Radicalisation

Access Training does not tolerate extremist views of any kind.
Any prejudice, discrimination or extremist views, including derogatory language, displayed by learners, staff or partner organisations will always be challenged and where appropriate dealt with in line with this policy.
As part of wider safeguarding responsibilities Access Training staff will be alert to:
• Disclosures by learners of their exposure to the extremist actions, views or materials of others. Learners voicing opinions drawn from extremist ideologies and narratives
• Attempts to impose extremist views or practices on others
• Learners accessing extremist material online, including through social networking sites
• Disclosures from partner agencies and employers of a learner’s exposure to the extremist actions, views or materials of others.
Access Training will closely follow any locally agreed procedure as set out by the Local Authority and/or agreed processes and criteria for safeguarding learners who are vulnerable to extremism and radicalisation.

What is PREVENT?

Prevent is short for ‘Preventing Violent Extremism’.
The overall aim of Prevent is to stop people supporting violent extremism by raising awareness of the issues and supporting people who may be vulnerable.
The Government launched the new Prevent strategy in June 2011.
“…at the root of this Prevent strategy is the basic assertion that extremism breeds terrorism; and that extremism is the vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs”.

What is Extremism?

Access Training recognises the accepted governmental definition of extremism as:
‘Vocal or active opposition to fundamental British values, including democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs; and/or calls for the death of members of our armed forces, whether in this country or overseas’.
One definition of an extremist is;
“A person who advocates or resorts to measures beyond the normal, especially in politics”.

What is Radicalisation?

The UK Home Office defines radicalisation as;
“The process by which people come to support terrorism and violent extremism and, in some cases, then join terrorist groups.”
No single measure will reduce radicalisation in the UK and that the only way to combat it is by targeting the at risk vulnerable groups and trying to assimilate them into society.

Diversity is good because it provides our society and culture with different views and opinions. You can learn new things and broaden your mind by working as part of a diverse team of people.

What does Diversity mean?

Diversity means differences. It is the inclusion of things, people, and places that are different.
Having different races, genders, ages, and ethnicities of people in one place is showing great diversity.
A good example would be, “People from different cultures live in my community, making it a diverse place to live.”
No one thing or person is the same. Everything is made up of different cultures, backgrounds and opinions to form something new and more diverse.

What does Equality mean?

Equality of Opportunity is a statement that all people should be treated similarly, unaffected by barriers, prejudices or preferences, except when certain protected characteristics which include race, age, gender and disability are identified and can be clearly justified.
It is a basic human right to work in an environment free from harassment and discrimination. A person’s sexuality, gender, disability, race or age should not determine whether they are employed, promoted or selected for redundancy - nor indeed should they be the brunt of discriminatory jokes.

How to a Make a Complaint

Each month there is a new topic to make you aware of. These are not linked to your qualification but contain information which is useful for life in general.
This forms part of the wider curriculum that Access Training provide.
Each subject will be brought up by your Tutor and recorded through the learner progress reviews.

What do Progress Reviews Cover?

Learner Progress Reviews should include discussion on, and a record of:
• your progress to date, measured against learning objectives.
• your personal development.
• any additional support needs and the support you are being given for these.
• Feedback and targets that stretch you in order to ensure you, where appropriate, are being prepared for higher level learning.
• any H&S problems or issues / H&S learning
• any Equality of Opportunity problems or issues / E&D learning
• Safeguarding (including PREVENT)
• Citizenship Calendar topic
• what you have achieved since since the last review
• SMART targets set to be achieved by the next planned assessment date.
• the progress made against the SMART targets set at the previous assessment appointment.
• comments from you / your reflection about the progress you are making.
• Your confidence and motivation.
• Information, Advice and Guidance (IAG) about your career path and your qualification is helping you.
• final IAG within the last term to prepare you for your next steps.

Learner Progress Reviews

Your progress should be reviewed regularly to ensure that progress is being made towards your learning goals and that you are able to identify any help / support you might need.

Learner Progress Reviews should:
• be conducted every term – whether that be a face to face or remote appointment.
• Take place usually in the training centre or remotely by prior appointment in line with assessment appointments
• involve the learner, Tutor, Support network (where applicable) and any other Access Training employee who has input into the learning process of the learner.

Who will help me with my Maths and English?

You will support from a dedicated Maths and English Tutor whilst on your Study Programme.

The English, Maths and ICT (EMI) Team at Access Training provide exceptional support for all Study Programme learners. Classes are usually held at our Nottingham Centre.

What are Functional Skills?

English and Maths Functional Skills are practical, literacy and numeracy qualifications, relevant to both young people and adult learners.
They can help you to develop and apply important skills such as communication, analytical and presentational skills. Functional Skills are assessed by completion of an examination.

Do I need to do Maths and English?

English and Maths are mandatory parts of a Study Programme, so yes, you will need to do Maths and English as part of your Study Programme, unless you have already achieved them to the correct level previously.
If you have achieved Maths and English previously you would be classed as "exempt".

The level of Maths and English required for each learners can differ based on what they have achieved previously.

You will have taken a diagnostic test at the recruitment stage which will accurately determine your current level of English and Maths skills.

Your Commitment / Attendance

You need to attend Access Training regularly as your attendance is a key factor in remaining on your Study Programme.

Not attending enough classes is a serious problem.
If you fall below the accepted level of attendance, you may face additional sanctions or be exited from the Study Programme.

This service is free for learners to access and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days per year. Basically, whenever you feel you might need it.

What is the Equality Act 2010?

A new Equality Act came into force on 1 October 2010.

It brings together over 116 separate pieces of legislation into one single Act.

The Act provides a legal framework to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality of opportunity for all.

It provides Britain with a discrimination law which protects individuals from unfair treatment and promotes a fair and more equal society.

The nine main pieces of legislation that have merged are:
