A child might want to stay with their abusive parents because they might not have anything left to support them (such as in the case with Reyna). When she was born and few years old, her parents left to the US and that forced her to rely on her siblings.
The thought of putting back a family inspires her to keep going. She doesn't care if they are abusive because she only wanted to have parents right next to her; she never had a proper family in the first place.

I personally have never been in a sitution like this before, so i will speak on opinion. I believe that a child is connected to their parent as soon as they are out of the womb because that is their first person to take care of them and hug them close. if you are getting abused by your parent you will after a while think maybe because it is something you did and it is their way of punishment. when you have nothing to compare to, you will assume that everyone goes through the same abusive you receive. no amount of abuse is ok, but you will be convinced that you are living under a roof and you are being fed that they do it out of pure love for you.

I think a main reason a child would want to stay with her abusive parents is because children are very attached to their parental figures. They hv known them since birth, so even if the parents are abusive, the child might still see the parent as their only caregiver.

In nature we get attached to someone who we can be dependent on in order to survive. Wanting to stay with an abusive parent is a survival instinct, without them, the child may think they would not be able to survive due to instinct.

And children of abusive of households do not know they are being abused. Abused kids have nothing to compare their lives to besides fiction and they can not comprehend that the ways their parents treat them is unacceptable. It is normal to them, even if it feels wrong, and they can't do anything about it.

I think that there are a couple of reasons why a child would want to be with their parents, even if they were abusive. One reason would be that they want/need someone to look up to, someone to guide. This is shown with Carlos, even though that his dad beats him over small accidents, he still wants his father to look up to. It is also shown with Reyna when she wants to make her father to guide her through life, but thinks that she has to make him proud of her so that he could do that. Another reason might be because they are just happy to be with their parents and block out the abuse. When the kid's mother came back for the second time, they accepted her back because they wanted her and they were just happy to be with her. - Elias Foley

A child would want to be with their abusive parent because of attachment. You think about all the comfort they brought to you when you needed them most and tend to throw out all the bad memories. Especially if you grew up with this 24/7, you might believe that this is normal behavior so you don't acknowledge it. It's almost the same as an abusive partner. You still stay with them because they bring you comfort and even if they don't, you are still attached and can't seem to let them go. You also grew up with your parents, you can't just leave because they took care of you. - Sarah Bonsall

I think a child would want to be with their abusive parents because we're all instinctually dependent on our parents. Especially as young children, we need people to look to and guide us since we have no idea what we're doing.

Even though Reyna's dad is abusive, she still wants to be with her dad, because she needs a parental figure to guide her through the early stages of life. She also had never had her parents consistently in her life, leading her to yearning for them for the majority of her life. She doesn't want to lose them again.

A child might feel the need to be with her parents despite them being abusive because they feel that it is better to be loved that way than to not be loved at all. If this is what the child grew up with, they most likely don't know any better and feel that they deserve this treatment from their parent/guardian. The final line is that these children probably don't know any better and believe that what they are receiving is in fact love, when its clearly not.

Parents are the most important role models for children, and humans are neurologically wired to feel dependent and attached to them during youth. Due to children having immensely minimal world experience, many do not fully comprehend when their parent(s) no longer loves them and desires to care for them. Despite abuse (both physical and mental in Reyna's case), a child will overlook and justify these setbacks as they solely want to feel loved and comforted. They will ignore the harsh circumstances and strictly think of their guardians as noble leaders, and keep persisting instead of acknowledging the trauma they have caused. Reyna repeatedly excused her father for his fits of aggressive behavior and idolized him despite the countless and unnecessary lashings and beatdowns within their home in El Otro Lado. The same applies psychologically with her mother, as Reyna desperately craved her affection despite her constantly causing problems upon arrival. - Arya Lamba
