During my first rehearsal today I explored different ways of performing Musical Theatre songs and sung through two songs which are "You Cant Get A Man With A Gun" from Annie Get Your Gun and "Reviewing The Situation" from Oliver!

I discovered different ways to use characterisation, to create a different person using my own body to change the way I walk, stand and sit. for example for reviewing the situation I have to completely change my characteristics to not only become a man but become a man who is much older, this is very challenging as the character Fagan is such and iconic character making him extremely hard to portray. I have take inspiration from Ron Moody's portrayal of the Fagan as I personally feel he played this part best, as he bought comical elements to the role but was able to keep it serious when necessary. I have decided that if I choose this song for the final performance I will keep the characterisation true to the original Oliver! musical and make sure that as well as being light hearted show the true meaning behind the song, I will do this by watching different versions of the song as well as watching the film to find out why Fagan has got to this point in the storyline. This will also relate back to Music Hall times where woman known as Drag Kings would become men characters for entertainment for variety shows.

I have also looked at the song from Annie get your gun, I feel ;like this song is very suited to my voice and also shows off my skills more, although this song is still challenging due to the fact that the character Annie Oakley is from South America, making her accent hard to execute properly.

Next rehearsal I will exploring different staging to create visual aesthetics that will be entertaining for the audience to watch. I will also be using props to make the characters more interesting.

During today's rehearsal I started to block the beginning of the two songs. After watching both films that the songs came from which are Oliver! and Annie Get Your Gun, I have more knowledge of the characters backround stories and I now can create a performance based on what I found out.

For Reviewing The Situation from Oliver! I understood that the character Fagan was deciding whether to leave his life of being a thief and becoming a normal man with a normal job so I decided to use the stairs in the theatre as my set to show the characters indecisiveness by walking up and down them whilst interacting with audience members. I also looked at small details such as the way he moves his hands when he is thinking.

I decided for Annie Get Your Gun to do something completely different because instead of being indecisive Annie Oakley is angry about the fact that because she isn't lady-like enough as well as the fact she isn't posh enough to be eligible for any man because of the way she is and finds It annoying that she is unable to be herself, although the song is funny I want to show the serious side too. I will do this by using my body to be funny and light hearted but using my facial expressions and voice to show the anger and the sadness behind the song.

During todays rehearsal after a lot of thinking I have decided to just focus on my completely the Annie Get Your Gun song. I found this to be more suited for my voice and easier when it comes to characterisation. I find reviewing the situation extremely difficult and challenging but would love to use it in the future. I didn't want to set high expectations for such an iconic song and not be able to live up to standards so I went with what makes me feel more comfortable as well s something that I can perform to the best of my ability.

I carried on blocking and coming up with fun ideas such as having three boys be in my piece to make it more interesting and funny and using a prop gun to do some tricks with as seen in the clip from the film. I had the feedback that I need to be more over the top and breathe more when singing so it becomes more powerful as I sing.

I think its also important to focus of the meaning of the song which will automatically help me connect with the audience by using characteristics that Betty Hutton used in the film. As seen in the link below.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGB7yTZEZE4

During today's rehearsal I started to run through my song You Can't Get A Man With A Gun, and focused more on the singing part because I found that my accent kept slipping up on certain parts of the song. For example the first verse is good up until just after the first chorus, but it is from here onwards that I notice my accent is not as noticeable than in the first half of the song. I will have to keep watching clips from the film to ensure I execute the accent properly in future rehearsals.

I have also watched a couple of TV episodes of the Beverly Hillbillies to help with the execution of my accent. During this, I found that I'm also struggling with my breathing so I have found some breathing exercises on YouTube to try that could help with my singing overall, shown by the link below. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q8k6MiEJjo4

I will be trying these every day and night as shown in the video to make sure I progress and improve throughout the process of rehearsals to be confident as well as prepared for the performance.

Next rehearsal I would like to focus on the performance as a whole and performing with the backing track that I have purchased in order to make sure that I am in time with the music, as it is different to the soundtrack I have originally been using.

During today's rehearsal I focused on the whole performance which includes singing, dancing, acting to the best of my ability. Last rehearsal I looked at different breathing exercises that I said I would try every morning and night to help with my singing voice overall I found they helped an awful lot I have been able to control my breathing whilst dancing, this made the acting side of character a lot more easier to portray than in last rehearsal.

I was giving feedback to be more confident in myself which will allow be to have more energy throughout the song because I will not be worrying about what I have to do and just being able to enjoy myself on stage. I will do this by performing next rehearsal in front of my peers to ensure I feel more confident in front of an audience and allow them to give me constructive criticism on the things I can improve but also define before the show.

I have also started to think about my costume as well as what is more suitable for the performance that I'm doing. in the film Annie Oakley wears a tea stained, ratty, old dress with thick tights and slip on boots. As seen in the picture below. I have also seen other people wear dungarees so I have decided to wear dungarees, a striped long sleeved top underneath and black timberlands, I have chosen this to wear because of the dancing about I do, the dungarees allow me to move freely to enable performing to be more comfortable.

During today's rehearsal I have been putting the final touches to my song You Can't Get A Man With A Gun. I have continued throughout the rehearsal process to carry on with breathing exercises every morning and night to ensure that my voice is improving everyday, so that I'm able to perform to the best of my ability for the performance.

I allowed my peers to watch my performance to give me notes and the feedback I got was to try and be confident and enjoy myself, so that everyone including me and audience members can relax. I decided to do my rehearsal in costume today to make sure that what I chose was most appropriate, but everything went well for that. My singing has improved alot but I just need to be more calm and focus on the characterisation which is the most important aspect for this song I am performing.

I definitely feel more comfortable with performing to the backing track as I have been practising anywhere and everywhere I can so make sure my timing is perfect. the dancing I chose to keep simple as there is already so much going on with regards to acting and the singing aspects of the song.
